Furthermore, in the Compendium, it is asked: Why is the feeling of suffering not abandoned in the first dhyana? It is said: Because it has not yet separated from the bad states of its side. If the feeling of suffering were abandoned, then the distinction of abiding in the second dhyana would not be apparent. Therefore, it should be understood that only not abandoning is correct. The feeling of happiness is also of two kinds, coarse and subtle. The third dhyana is necessarily produced from the coarse feeling of happiness, because it is free from desire for mental happiness. The fourth is also necessarily produced from the subtle feeling of happiness, because it is also free from desire for the feeling of happiness. Therefore, based on the fact that they necessarily arise from the four aspects of coarse and subtle feelings of happiness and suffering, the four dhyanas are established. As it is said in the Compendium: Why are there only four, not more and not less? It is said: Because they have completely transcended happiness and suffering. Thus, up to the final fourth dhyana, they have completely transcended happiness and suffering. Thus it is said. Therefore, the dhyanas are distinguished by necessarily arising from feelings, while the formless realms are distinguished by necessarily arising from perception. Thus, there are two kinds of perception: perception of external form and perception of internal consciousness. For the former, there are also two kinds of perception to be abandoned: form and obstructive perception, and the antidote, perception of space. What necessarily arises from these are, in order, the sphere of infinite space and the sphere of infinite consciousness. For the clear grasping of consciousness, there are also two kinds: attachment to consciousness, which is an unfavorable factor, and the antidote, the perception of nothingness. What necessarily arises from the former is the sphere of nothingness, and what necessarily arises from the latter is the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Therefore, the formless realms are neither more nor less than four. The order is established according to the order in which they arise in the continuum of the yogi. The third is the result: by cultivating the first dhyana as small, medium, and large, one will be reborn in the retinue of Brahma and before Brahma in order.

Furthermore, they are born in the Pure Abode and Great Brahma heavens. Similarly, the second, third, and fourth dhyanas, through meditating on small, medium, and large, it should be known that the three birthplaces of the second, third, and fourth dhyanas are achieved in order. As for the formless realms, through meditating on medium, small, and large, it should be known that the birthplaces of the formless realms are achieved, with various differences such as high, low, inferior, and good. Among them, small refers to not possessing both applications. Medium refers to possessing either one. Large refers to possessing both. Second, the four immeasurables are explained separately, among which the first of the six meanings is the individual nature: Loving-kindness is based on dhyana, focusing on sentient beings who desire happiness, thinking "Alas, how wonderful it would be if these sentient beings could attain happiness," it is the samadhi and wisdom that abide in this and are truly accomplished. Compassion is focusing on suffering sentient beings, with the aspect of thinking "Alas, how wonderful it would be if they could be free from suffering." Joy is focusing on sentient beings who possess happiness, with the aspect of thinking "How wonderful it would be if they did not depart from happiness." Equanimity is focusing on sentient beings who possess afflictions, with the aspect of thinking "Alas, how wonderful it would be if they could be free from afflictions such as attachment." Or, it is the aspect of having an equal mind towards sentient beings who are near, far, and neutral. Second, the divisions are three: focusing on sentient beings, focusing on dharma, and without focus. The first is focusing on truly existent sentient beings, having the aspect of wishing them to be free from suffering, etc., this is that of ordinary beings. The second is focusing on merely imputing sentient beings to the aggregates of dharma, this is that of noble Hearers and Solitary Buddhas who realize the selflessness of persons. The third is focusing on merely imputing sentient beings to the aggregates, which lack true nature and are like illusions. This is that of Bodhisattvas and Buddhas who realize the selflessness of phenomena. Third, the objects are the harmful intent, harm, displeasure, and attachment and aversion of outsiders and Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and they meditate by focusing on the beloved sentient beings in order, as antidotes. As stated in the Treasury: Immeasurable.
