If someone asks, can the ninth affliction of the peak of existence be eliminated? The answer is: This is because it is based on the subtle habitual tendencies of afflictions, so there is no fault. The second is Nirvana after birth: that is, for beings who have not eliminated both fetters, as soon as they are born in the realm of form, they directly realize the path, thereby directly realizing the liberation of eliminating the gross afflictive obscurations of the three realms. The third, Nirvana with effort: that is, for beings who have not eliminated both fetters, after being born in the realm of form, they directly realize the path through effort, thereby directly realizing the liberation of eliminating the gross afflictive obscurations of the three realms. The fourth, Nirvana without effort: that is, one can directly realize the path without effort, thereby attaining Nirvana. The fifth is upward transference: which is further divided into two types, the first being reaching the Akanistha heaven: there are three ways of upward transference other than directly reaching the peak of existence: surpassing, half-surpassing, and transference through death in all places. The first is: here, one meditates on sequential dhyanas, and because one has tasted the flavor of the first dhyana, one declines from the higher dhyanas, and then is born in the Brahma host heaven, and there, through the power of habituation, one cultivates dhyana, enters Akanistha, and there obtains the exhaustion of suffering. The second is: the others are the same as the former, but in the second birth, one is born in any of the lower three of the Pure Abodes. The third is: except for the Great Brahma, one gradually passes through other form realm abodes, and finally exhausts suffering in Akanistha. The second is the non-returner directly reaching the peak of existence: Bodhisattvas do not seek to be born in the formless realm, because that is not a place for taming beings. Therefore, it is only said that one has eliminated desire for the form realm and has the ability to be born there. Among these, there are two types: when one obtains the fruit of non-return, one exhausts suffering in the present moment, that is, the peace of seeing the Dharma; and upward transference through the mastery of the eight liberations of samadhi, which is different from directly going to Akanistha. The fourth is: entering the fruit of Arhatship, that is, from the elimination of the eighth affliction of the peak of existence, the Bodhisattva diligently strives to eliminate the ninth affliction, in order to obtain the fruit of a Sramana who has eliminated the five lower fetters, which is to be obtained through the Mahayana path.

The chapter on diligence. Fifth, the self-reliant Bodhisattva like a rhinoceros horn is one who is born in a world where no Buddha appears and there are no other Bodhisattvas, aims at the Śrāvakayāna's Piṭaka, manifests the path of abandoning the afflictive obscurations, and thus becomes a Bodhisattva who brings suffering to an end. The explanation in the Great Commentary that this aims at the Śrāvakayāna's Piṭaka refers to the case where there is only the Śrāvakayāna's teaching and no Mahāyāna teaching. If there is the Mahāyāna's teaching, then there are Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and because there are rivals, one will not become a self-reliant one like a rhinoceros horn. Even if there are Śrāvakas, they are inferior to oneself, so one will not become one with rivals. To be able to explain it like the view of Gendun Chopel, it has rarely occurred before in the land of snows.

When abiding in non-existence, it is the samadhi and wisdom combined, which is the first clear appearance of the apprehended object being devoid of self-nature, distinct from consciousness. As it is said in the Ornament: When the Bodhisattva abides, except for the speech of the mind, all things are not seen. Thus it is said. The peak of the samadhi where appearances increase is: in order to increase the appearance of the formless, diligence is exerted, thereby obtaining the samadhi and wisdom combined, which is a distinct appearance of the apprehended object being devoid of self-nature. Thus it is said: In order to increase the appearance of Dharma, steadfast diligence should be exerted. Thus it is said. The samadhi of forbearance, which enters into one aspect of Suchness, is the samadhi and wisdom combined, which abides in mind-only and greatly increases the clear appearance of the nature of the formless. Thus it is said: Thereafter, the appearance of all things will appear as mind. At that time, this apprehended object will abandon distraction. Thus it is said. The peak of Dharma, which is the uninterrupted samadhi, is the samadhi and wisdom combined, which, after that, obtains the complete appearance of the apprehended object being devoid of self-nature. Thus it is said: At that time, one quickly touches the uninterrupted samadhi. Thus, after that, there is distraction of the apprehended object. Thus it is said. In these stages, because the clear appearance of Dharma-nature is obtained through meditation, it is called the Ground of Adhimukti-carya (practice of aspiration) in order to stabilize faith. Although the Bodhisattva abiding on this ground is an ordinary being, he has completely transcended all the defects of childhood and possesses countless qualities such as samadhi, dharani, liberation, and supernormal knowledge. As stated in the Ratnamegha Sutra, this is in terms of the sharpness or dullness of the Bodhisattva's faculties, and it is not definite for all. Thirdly, the great translator said: These aspects of ascertainment arise from the power of the cause of meditation, and because the object, Dharma-nature, has a clear appearance, they are said to be Yoga-pratyaksha (yogic direct perception). This is reasonable because direct perception enters by manifesting the object without dividing it into parts, thereby directly seeing Dharma-nature.
