Striving to attain the fruit of the ascetic's conduct. The second division is: the Arhat Stream-enterer of gradual and sudden kinds. The first has two kinds: faith-follower and insight-attainer. The third boundary is: if the gradual Stream-enterer is one who has previously abandoned desire, it starts from striving in the practice of abandoning the remaining objects to be abandoned through meditation, while others are from the practice of abandoning the afflictions of the first dhyana up to the ninth uninterrupted path of the peak of existence. The sudden Stream-enterer is: like the special sudden Stream-enterer. The second is the fruit-abiding, the first of the three definitions is: abiding in the fruit of the ascetic's conduct, completely separated by abandoning the five higher fetters. The five higher fetters are: desire for form and formless realms, excitement, pride, and ignorance, because these are the causes of the two upper realms. That is how it is said. Why is it called Arhat? Because having abandoned all afflictions, it is worthy of being offered to by all those with attachment. The second division is divided according to the way of definitely arising from what is to be abandoned: gradual and sudden two kinds. The first is: the Arhat attained by gradually abandoning desire in the nine grounds. The second is: the Arhat attained by abandoning the afflictions of the three realms all at once in one way. Divided from the perspective of faculties, there are six: one who is subject to decline, one who is subject to self-harm, one who is subject to protection, one who is not subject to moving from abiding, one who is fit to realize, and one who is not subject to wavering. A dull faculty person, who does not possess two practices in the stage of the path, is separated from desirable qualities, whether it is permissible to practice or not, even if killed, will decline from the samadhi of abiding in bliss in the visible dharma. The second and others are the same as the former, but if one kills oneself, one will not decline. The third is: previously being constantly associated with practice, if one protects the mind from desirable qualities, one will not decline. The fourth is: previously being associated with respectful practice, even if one enjoys desirable qualities, one will not decline, because a dull faculty person cannot transform the faculties into sharp ones. The fifth is: previously cultivating the two practices in combination, even if one enjoys desirable qualities, one will not de

Urla. Because it can transform dull faculties into sharp ones. The sixth is that by meditating with two preliminary conditions, one will not degenerate even when enjoying desirable qualities. Because one's nature is sharp, there is no need to tame the faculties. The first five are preceded by faith and desire, while the latter is preceded by attainment through seeing. Furthermore, the first five are: in order to manifest the mental liberation of dwelling in bliss in this life, they depend on the equipment that is in accordance with the arising of samadhi, being free from illness, and relying on a special place. This is called liberation with time. The latter is: because one manifests samadhi at will, one manifests the liberation of the mind, which is called liberation without time. Alternatively, from the perspective of the possibility and impossibility of degenerating from the meditative absorption of dwelling in bliss in this life, for the sake of other times and permanent liberation, respectively, there are: liberation with time and liberation without time. The term "degeneration" is considered by the Vaibhashikas to be degeneration from the fruit, but here it is degeneration only from the meditative absorption of dwelling in bliss in this life, not from the fruit. As it is said in the Pramanavarttika: "Non-harm and the true meaning, from their nature, by reversal, even if effort is made, it will not turn back, because the mind holds to that side." Therefore, the abandonment that is superior by reason is a complete abandonment, and therefore will not return. Otherwise, there would be no trust in liberation. In the Abhidharmakoshabhashya, it says: "Those who have the nature of degenerating will not necessarily degenerate, nor will they necessarily realize it until they have the opportunity to realize it, but it is said that way because of the possibility." Having done that, there can be six Arhats in all three realms. According to those who say that one will inevitably degenerate until one realizes it, there are six in the desire realm, and in the two upper realms, there are two immovable dharmas that do not move from their place, because in those two realms, it is impossible to have degeneration, thoughts of death, and the transference of faculties, so it is said.
