It is nirvana. The intermediate state is the state of seeking existence, so when it is separated from the desire for existence, it will die. An Arhat, because he is separated from the desire for existence, his body ceases to function. Or, the intermediate state exists for a short time, so it quickly enters the nirvana without remainder, therefore it is called nirvana without remainder. Among those who go quickly in the form realm, these are those who have the karma of direct realization, have sharp faculties, and have small afflictions. The second is the one who is born and dies, because he has not abandoned the bond of birth and direct realization, so when the existence of form in the form realm is just established, he directly realizes the path and attains nirvana. The third is the one with effort, which is the same as the previous one, and attains nirvana by directly realizing the path through effort. The fourth is the one without effort, who, due to the power of habituation, directly realizes the path without effort and attains nirvana. These three have the karma of experiencing the result after birth, and their faculties and afflictions are in the middle. These are, when afflictions are abandoned, there is nirvana with remainder, and as long as life is not exhausted, one will not die, therefore it is not nirvana without remainder. The fifth is the nature of upward movement. It is divided into the explanation of cause, transition, and practice. The first of these three is that if a non-returner is born in the form realm, from the continuum, he can attain nirvana in the support of Akanistha or the peak of existence. Among them, the upper refers to Akanistha and the peak of existence, in order, because they are the end point of the abandonment of form and the peak of existence. Transition refers to going through birth there. The second is that, from the perspective of cause, there are two types: going to the end point of Akanistha and going to the end point of the peak of existence. Those who have the practice of insight, through practicing mixed defiled and undefiled samadhi, go to Akanistha. Those who have the practice of calm abiding, like the taste of samadhi produced in the continuum, except for Brahma and Akanistha, the other places in the form and formless realms successively continue, thereby going to the peak of existence. The nature of these is, in order, that through being born in the form realm, one can attain nirvana in the support of Akanistha, and that one can attain nirvana in the support of the peak of existence. These two are, certainly not

There is no certainty of going to Avīci and the peak of existence, because in the intermediate state it is also possible to be shaken from sorrow. Even so, because there is no going beyond that, it is said thus, if the stream-enterer is obstructed in that way, it is like the seventh time. Why is there no going beyond that? Because there is no other noble place higher than Avīci, and there is no other place higher than the peak of existence. These are those who have the karma of experiencing change in other numbers of times, those with dull faculties, and those with great afflictions. Among them, there are three ways of going to the ultimate end of Avīci: leaping, half-leaping, and dying and transmigrating in all places. The first is: here, by alternately meditating on the fourth dhyana, having first tasted the flavor, one falls away from the second dhyana and above, and later is born in the Brahma host, and there, by the power of previous habit, alternately meditating on the fourth dhyana, one is born below that in Avīci, and thus is liberated from sorrow. The second is: the other is the same as before, and from the Brahma host one is born in any of the lower three of the Pure Abodes, and after that one enters Avīci and is liberated from sorrow. The third is: except for the Great Brahma, all other places of form are successively traversed, and finally one is liberated from sorrow in Avīci. The Great Brahma is a place of view, and is exhausted as one lord, so the noble ones are not born there, and the ultimate going to the peak of existence is because one has not alternately meditated on dhyana, and one is not born in the Pure Abodes either. In the third, by whom, for what purpose, relying on what mind, in what way, what fruit is achieved from meditation. The first is: the non-returner manifests the body and the Arhat both meditate with liberation from a part. The second is: in order to cut off all the veils of taste for those with dull faculties, and in order to make the sharp ones abide happily in the visible dharma, and also in order to make the non-returners be born in the Pure Abodes, one also meditates, but one does not meditate for the birth of the Arhat. As it is said: For the sake of birth and abiding, and because of fear of afflictions. The third is: first, one meditates relying on the mind of the fourth dhyana, because that is easy with the supreme ability of the mind.
