Transcendence. The difference in antidote is obtaining the antidote to those to be abandoned—untainted wisdom. Among them, the seventh aspect must be abandoned; otherwise, if the three minor afflictions of the desire realm are not abandoned, one may take birth twice like other once-returners, thus the difference in birth will not be accomplished. The eighth may or may not be abandoned, but the ninth must be one that is never abandoned in that life. If it is not so, having attained the non-returner, one will not take birth in the desire realm. There is the ability to take one birth in the desire realm because the ninth affliction has not been abandoned. There is no ability to take more than one birth because the great of the small has been abandoned, and even if it has not been abandoned, there is no ability to take more than two births. The difference in antidote is as before. This is called one interruption because when the fruit of the non-returner is attained, it is interrupted by one aspect of affliction, or when Nirvana is attained, it is interrupted by one life. The seventh has been abandoned, and the eighth has not been abandoned. Is this not an interruption of two aspects? How is it called one interruption? Even if the eighth has not been abandoned, it cannot interrupt because it can be abandoned in that life. The ninth, however, can hinder the attainment of the non-returner in that life because after abandoning it, it is difficult to transcend the realm. As it is said, "Initially, the non-returner greatly obstructs the attainment of the Arhat." Just as karma obstructs in three situations, afflictions also obstruct. The third is the boundary: for the quick path, it is from the sixteenth moment of realizing the truth, and for the gradual path, it is from the liberation path after abandoning the sixth to the uninterrupted path of the ninth. The third pair is the stream-enterer of the non-returner and the abiding one. The first of the two is the first of the three—definition: abandoning the last five lower fetters, striving on the path to obtain the fruit of the ascetic practice that is thoroughly distinguished. The classification is the same as the once-returner. The boundary is the same as the stream-enterer of the once-returner of the quick path due to the previous detachment from desire, and the difference is that from the ninth of the desire realm to the ninth of nothingness, it is what was previously abandoned by the path of seeing. The stream-enterer of the gradual path.

The two grounds refer to the period from the path of application that abandons the seventh [attachment] up to the uninterrupted path of the ninth. The fruit position has three characteristics: it abides in the fruit of a śrāmaṇa who is completely separated by abandoning the last five lower fetters. The last five lower fetters are the three bonds, the seventh [attachment] to desire, and malice. The first three are called lower fetters because they are the cause of the last rebirth as a common being, and the last two are called lower fetters because they are the cause of the lower realm of the desire realm. Why is it called 'non-returner'? Because one will not be reborn in the desire realm again, or because the birth of birth is cut off and one will not take a second birth there. Secondly, if we divide it according to the way of obtaining the fruit, there are two types of non-returners: those who obtain it gradually and those who have previously abandoned attachment. If we divide it according to the way of relying on the noble Dharma, there are two types of non-returners: those who have exhausted their lifespan in the desire realm and those who have not. The first is that one obtains the non-returner by relying on the noble path continuously arising in the desire realm, because one has a greater sense of weariness. In the very lifetime in which one obtains the non-returner, one passes into nirvāṇa, as it says in the Treasury [Abhidharmakośa]: 'A noble one who has exhausted his lifespan in the desire realm does not go to another realm.' This is different from the peace of the visible Dharma, because in the lifetime in which one obtains the noble path, one does not directly realize nirvāṇa. The second is that one obtains the non-returner in the very lifetime in which one obtains the noble path, and there are four types: those who go to the form realm, those who go to the formless realm, those who have peace of the visible Dharma, and those who realize it with the body. The first has two aspects: definition and division. The first is that a person who is a non-returner with a basis in the desire realm connects the continuum in the intermediate state or the state of rebirth in the form realm. The second is divided into five, the first of which is passing into nirvāṇa in the intermediate state, which means that one has abandoned the fetters that lead to rebirth in the form realm, but has not abandoned the fetters that lead to direct realization, and therefore directly realizes nirvāṇa on the basis of the form realm. There are three types of this: for example, just as a spark of fire in the morning dies as soon as it jumps up, one passes into nirvāṇa as soon as the intermediate state is formed; just as a red-hot piece of iron dies as it is thrown up into the sky, one passes into nirvāṇa in the middle of the intermediate state; just as a spark of fire dies as it rises up and has not yet fallen to the ground, one passes into nirvāṇa at the end of the intermediate state. These are all without remainder.
