Therefore. The second is the classification: faith and understanding, and seeing and attaining, two types. The first is: the former follower of faith, when abiding in the fruition, due to the increase of faith, it is called faith and understanding because it is well distinguished by further aspiration. The second is: the former follower of Dharma, at the time of fruition, it is said so because it is well distinguished by seeing with the increase of wisdom. Distinguishing by application, there are two types: those who merely abide in the fruit and those who have distinctions. The first is that those who abide in the fruit do not strive on the path for the sake of the fruit with distinctions. The second is the opposite of that. These two, distinguished by faculty and application, should also be regarded in the same way for the two intermediate fruits. If distinguished by the difference of birth, if it stops like that, there are seven returns, and two types of birth from lineage to lineage. The first is: having three distinctions, namely, the distinction of abandonment is that the objects to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm have not been completely abandoned, the distinction of the fruit is abiding only in the fruit, the distinction of birth is taking birth seven times in the gods and humans of the desire realm, and manifesting the end of suffering on the seventh time. Thus it is said: abiding in the fruit, the objects to be abandoned by cultivation are not exhausted, if it stops like that, there are seven returns. On this, the Vaibhashikas think that there are seven births in humans, seven births in the intermediate state, and seven births in the gods of the desire realm. As such, they think there are seven intermediate states, taking a total of twenty-eight births, but because seven times are similar as a group, it is called seven returns, like a tree with seven leaves, and a monk who is proficient in the seven abodes. The Sutrantikas think: the Sutra says, "A person with perfect view achieves eight existences and no longer exists," and generally speaks of seven times among gods and humans, so it refers to the human race. There is much to say about this, so let it be put aside for now. The second type, birth from lineage to lineage, also has three distinctions: the distinction of abandonment is that three or four of the objects to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm have been abandoned, and the fifth has not been abandoned. The distinction of birth is that in any of the gods or humans of the desire realm, two or three births of the same kind are taken, and then Nirvana is attained. The distinction of antidote is that the uncontaminated faculties that are the antidote to those abandoned things are obtained. Thus it is said, from three or four types

Thus it is said. Among these, the third type of desire realm afflictions must be eliminated. Otherwise, because the great desire realm afflictions remain, the attainment of a fourth birth, etc., cannot be prevented, and therefore the distinction of births will not be established. Therefore, if the great desire realm afflictions are not eliminated, there is the potential to attain up to seven similar births. For example, if it is established in that way, it is like the seven existences. If the medium afflictions are not eliminated, there is the potential to attain up to three births, like being born from one class to another. If the small afflictions are not eliminated, there is the potential to attain one birth, like a once-returner. Therefore, if the three great desire realm afflictions are not eliminated, the distinction of births will not be established. The fourth, whether eliminated or not, is fine. The fifth must be something that was not previously eliminated and will never be abandoned in that lifetime. If it is abandoned, the sixth will also inevitably be abandoned, thus becoming a once-returner. Only then can the distinction of births be established. The sixth, like the ninth, does not need to transcend the realm, so obtaining the result in that lifetime will not be obstructed. It is necessary to definitely take two similar births. Otherwise, the meaning of the term "from one class to another" in the lineage will not be valid. And, because the medium afflictions are not eliminated, there is the potential to attain up to three births. The third time, taking or not taking is fine. It is impossible to take a fourth time or later, because the three great afflictions have been eliminated, and a fourth time or later cannot be attained. Elimination without obtaining the antidote of the uncontaminated path may lead to relapse, and if the elimination is lost, the distinction of births will also not be established. Therefore, the distinction of the antidote lies in obtaining the power of the uncontaminated path. Among these, those who see the truth among the gods of sentient beings are born from the class of gods to the class of gods and attain nirvana. Those who see the truth among humans are born from the class of humans to the class of humans and attain nirvana. Therefore, here it is divided into two types: being born from the class of gods to the class of gods, and being born from the class of humans to the class of humans. This is because it abides on the path with special results, and therefore it is established as entering the subsequent result. Third, the boundary is:
