Therefore, because it is called "Śrāmaṇa," that is why (it is said). Abandoning (afflictions) is the fruit of separation (from afflictions), and the path of liberation is the fruit of a similar cause. Therefore, these are called the fruits of the Śrāmaṇa path. As it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: "The Śrāmaṇa path is the stainless path, the fruit is conditioned and unconditioned, including the path of liberation and cessation (meditation), these are eighty-nine." These are said according to different circumstances. The sūtras say that there are four fruits of the Śrāmaṇa path, such as the stream-enterer fruit. Secondly, since there are eighty-nine fruits of the Śrāmaṇa path, why are they established as four fruits? The Treasury of Knowledge says: "The four fruits are established because the five causes exist. On the fruit, first abandoning the path, then obtaining (the fruit), as well as cessation, obtaining eight kinds of wisdom, obtaining sixteen aspects." This means that in any case, as long as the five causes exist, it is established as the fruit. For example, first abandoning the path of abiding, obtaining the path of the fruit, obtaining the merit of abandoning all (afflictions), simultaneously obtaining eight kinds of Dharma and subsequent wisdom, obtaining sixteen aspects such as impermanence. Or, it should be explained in this way: There are three things to be abandoned, namely the three bonds that become obstacles to entering liberation, as well as the five lower fetters that become obstacles to transcending the lower realm and the desire of the lower realm, and the five higher fetters that become obstacles to transcending the upper realm. These are, in order, the coarse, subtle, and extremely subtle (afflictions) that those who seek liberation should abandon, and abandoning these are also the small, medium, and large fruits to be sought. Among them, abandoning the first (three bonds) is established as the stream-enterer fruit. The sūtra says: "This instruction is to enter the stream by abandoning the three bonds." Making the five lower fetters weak, and completely abandoning them, are established as the once-returner fruit and the non-returner fruit, respectively. The sūtra says: "What is the once-returner fruit? It is abandoning the (three) bonds, as well as greed, hatred, and ignorance, etc."

What is cutting off? It is that. What is the fruit of non-return? It is said to be the abandonment of the five lower fetters that are in accordance with the final part of all connections. Why are two fruits established upon the abandonment of what is to be abandoned through cultivation in the desire realm? Because the afflictions to be abandoned through cultivation in the desire realm are very coarse and are abandoned gradually. When most of the afflictions of the desire realm are exhausted, it is established as the fruit of once-returner; when all are exhausted, it is established as the fruit of non-returner. This is to show the two distinctions of the desire realm, and to show that one quickly transcends from it. Third, through abandonment, the fruit of arhat is established. In the sutra it says: 'The abandonment of the five higher fetters that are in accordance with the higher part is the fruit of arhat.' In summary, what is to be abandoned is definitely twofold: what is to be abandoned through seeing and what is to be abandoned through cultivation. Considering what is to be abandoned through seeing, it is established as the fruit of stream-enterer. What is to be abandoned through cultivation is also twofold: what is included in the desire realm and what is included in the higher realms. Considering what is to be abandoned through cultivation in the desire realm, there are coarse and subtle aspects. Considering the abandonment of these, the two intermediate fruits are established in order. From the abandonment of what is to be abandoned through cultivation in the higher realms, it is established as the fruit of arhat. Thus, the number of fruits is definitely four in terms of what is to be abandoned. Third, the four fruits, the former ones are the cause of the latter ones, so it is the order of meaning. Fourth, upon what does one rely to obtain them? The first and second fruits rely on the initial uninterrupted path, because the afflictions of the desire realm have not been abandoned. The third fruit, if obtained gradually, relies only on the uninterrupted path. If obtained by someone who is free from desire, it relies on any of the actual bases of meditative concentration. It does not rely on the formless realms, because they cannot serve as an antidote to the afflictions of the desire realm. Moreover, the non-returner is also distinguished by having abandoned the afflictions of the desire realm. The fourth fruit relies on the six concentrations and the first three formless realms. If one is to obtain two fruits in the lower realm, one relies on the six concentrations. If one is to obtain it in the formless realm, one obtains it by relying on any of the first three formless realms. Through which path, seeing or cultivation, is it obtained? The first fruit is obtained only through the path of seeing.
