That is because it is thoroughly distinguished by abandoning what is abandoned by the path of seeing. The two in between are: If obtained sequentially, it is obtained by the path of meditation; in most cases, it is obtained by separating from desire and separating from desire for desire, then it is obtained by the path of seeing. The fourth fruit is: obtained only by the path of meditation, because it is thoroughly distinguished by abandoning what is abandoned by the path of meditation of the upper realms. Which path, mundane or supramundane, is used to obtain it? The first and last fruits are obtained only by the supramundane path, because the mundane path cannot abandon what is abandoned by the path of seeing and the afflictions of the peak of existence. The two intermediate fruits, obtained by the path of seeing, are obtained by the supramundane path; obtained by the path of meditation, if that person is a practitioner of calm abiding, then it is obtained by the mundane path, and if he is a practitioner of insight, then it is obtained by the supramundane path. Any fruit obtained by the supramundane path will not be lost, because the supramundane path is what uproots the seeds of what is to be abandoned. Those obtained by the mundane path may be lost. Therefore, the first and last fruits will not be lost, while the intermediate ones may be lost. Fifth, in the Treasury of Knowledge, it says: "Three fruits of the desire realm are obtained, the last three are from above, there is no path of seeing, the scripture of non-arising says this, and it is here that it is perfected." Therefore, the first three fruits are obtained only by the basis of the desire realm, because the stream-enterer and the once-returner have not separated from the desire for the desire realm, and the non-returner is also a sequential obtainer, because it is obtained by relying on the initial preparation, and the intermediate being who transcends is obtained by relying on the path of seeing, because the basis of the upper realms does not have the path of seeing. The reason for that is also: because the basis of the upper realms does not have renunciation, and the absence of renunciation is also because there is no initiation of the noble path in order to generate certainty about the three realms. The scripture also says that the five fruits such as attaining Nirvana in the intermediate state are initiated here and perfected there. The fourth fruit can be obtained on the basis of all three realms. Second, regarding the establishment of the person who abides on it, the first of the two, the signifying example and the signified meaning, has a pair of four...

The first fruit is divided into two: the fruit of entering the stream and the fruit of abiding in it. The first fruit has three aspects: nature, classification, and boundaries. First, the nature is: In order to obtain the fruit of complete separation after abandoning the three bonds, one strives diligently on the path. Abandoning means: not completely abandoning the desire realm's cultivatable afflictions, or abandoning any of the first five qualities, and being in the process of abandoning the afflictions to be seen. Realization means: abiding on any path of application or seeing. Second, it is divided into two: faith-follower and dharma-follower. The first is that those with dull faculties follow that path with faith. The second is that those with sharp faculties follow that path with wisdom. Third, it is from the last moment of the path of application to any of the first fifteen moments of the path of seeing. In the Treasury of Knowledge, it is said: "Those fifteen moments are the path of seeing, for the unseen to be seen. In those, the faculties are sharp and dull, and faith-followers and dharma-followers follow accordingly." Second, it is divided into gradual and sudden realization. First, divided into three, the first, the nature is: abiding in the fruit of the ascetic's conduct, completely separated by abandoning the three bonds. The three bonds are: the view of self, adherence to precepts and vows, and doubt. Why is it that abandoning these is established as entering the stream? Because these three are the main antidotes to be abandoned by the one who enters the stream, and are the main obstacles to entering the path of peace. Thus, the view of self grasps the aggregates as self, thereby generating attachment to samsara, becoming the cause of not being liberated from suffering; adherence to precepts and vows generates attachment to evil paths, and even if liberated, it takes a detour, becoming the cause of not being truly liberated; doubt generates doubt about the good path, becoming the cause of not being truly liberated. For example, not wanting to go, wanting to go but relying on the wrong path, and doubting the correct path are all obstacles to reaching the destination. As it is said: "Not wanting to go and the path is wrong, and doubt about the path increases by one, obstructing the path to liberation, therefore these three are taught." Why is it called entering the stream? Because of the obstacles to liberation, and second, entering the stream of peace from
