When any suffering whatsoever occurs, one should contemplate it. After that, one should contemplate its cause. After that, one should contemplate liberation from it. After that, it is in order to contemplate the means of liberation from it. Thus it is said. Second, regarding the meaning of the limbs, the first of the four is instructing on the truth of suffering. What is the instruction? The object of knowledge is suffering. How is the method? Not transcending the conventional truth and the ultimate truth, emptiness, which is the result of afflictions from form and so on, and the perfection of wisdom that realizes it, etc., in the ultimate sense, are the nature of Suchness, free from elaboration, with one single nature. Having understood this, it is in the manner of learning. The purpose is generally for the sake of all sentient beings' liberation from sorrow, etc., and specifically, to abandon the manifest clinging to suffering as impermanent, etc., as objects of knowledge. The sutra is: Shariputra, if a great being strives for the emptiness of form, it is called striving. Second, instructing on the origin. What is the instruction? The object to be abandoned is the origin. How is the method? Not transcending the two truths, form and so on, which are included in contaminated causes, are the origin, newly arising when previously non-existent, and cessation, arising when previously existent. They are not of the nature of being completely afflicted by attachment and so on, nor of being purified by faith and so on. Because emptiness, free from elaboration, and form and so on, are also the cause of rebirth, in the ultimate sense, they are undifferentiated. In the manner of learning. The purpose is generally as before, and particularly as an antidote to the manifest clinging to the origin as something to be abandoned. The sutra is: Is form of the nature of arising? Or of the nature of ceasing? One does not truly see it accordingly. Third, instructing on the truth of cessation. What is the instruction? The object to be realized is cessation. How is the method? Not transcending the two truths, the nature of mind, emptiness, being free from adventitious stains, that which is labeled as cessation, for that, the five aggregates, represented by form, the eighteen elements, the twelve sense bases do not exist, therefore the twelve links of dependent origination, represented by ignorance, also do not arise, nor do they cease.
