Furthermore, there are two ways to explain "for the sake of" by combining it with "having the object of benefiting others" as the cause. The first is: the mind that desires the fruit of perfect and complete enlightenment for the sake of others. The phrase "for the sake of others" is to distinguish it from the self-benefiting bodhicitta, because even those who merely desire perfect and complete enlightenment have it. However, those people pursue enlightenment for their own sake, not for the sake of others. The second is: having attained perfect and complete enlightenment oneself, one should strive as much as possible for the sake of others. As mentioned earlier, the mind that desires perfect and complete enlightenment, arising from the desire to benefit others, according to the former explanation: desire, what? Perfect and complete enlightenment. For whose benefit? For the benefit of others. According to the latter explanation: desire, what? For the benefit of others. When? After attaining perfect and complete enlightenment. Therefore, in both explanations, benefiting others is the main thing, and enlightenment is the secondary thing to be accomplished. If one does not know these two fundamental methods of explanation, then in debate, one will not understand the reason why intention is the cause and aspiration is the assistant, and one will only be groping in the dark. However, nowadays, the listeners seem to be satisfied with just hearing the sound. The commentary adopts the latter explanation. Third, the commentary includes definition and classification. In the definition, there are two ways to avoid controversy, the first is: Bodhicitta is: what is to be explained. Definition: Because one cannot liberate others without liberating oneself, therefore, after becoming a Buddha oneself, for the sake of others, one should place them on the path of the three vehicles according to the capacity of the three types of beings, that is, the definition of arousing the desire for perfect and complete enlightenment with the aim of benefiting others. The classification is: as it is said, "Wanting to go and going, how to distinguish, one should know, similarly, the wise should distinguish these two, and know them in order." As mentioned above, the bodhicitta with the definition, without the assistance of practices such as generosity, is the aspirational bodhicitta, and with the assistance of practices is the engaging bodhicitta.

Also, truly observe the nature itself. Second, regarding the two responses to the debate, the first is about who, with what, and how to debate. The first of the three is: Regarding the meaning of the phrase "wanting complete and perfect enlightenment," there is no analysis, but rather a debate based on the literal meaning. The second is: Because it relies on the definitions of mind and mental factors as stated in "In that, seeing meaning is a kind of consciousness, its distinction arises from the mind," and the view that they are shown as different entities. The third is: How can wanting complete and perfect enlightenment itself be generating bodhicitta? If not, then it is excessive, because truly seeking complete and perfect enlightenment is wanting to obtain virtuous Dharma, and the desire for enlightenment arises in the mind. This is pervasive. Generating bodhicitta, as it is said: "Great joy and great diligence, great meaning and great arising, the hero of the Bodhisattva, the mind arises with two meanings." Thus, the intention corresponding to the mind, the object of the mind is particularly sublime, manifesting the benefit of oneself and others, doesn't it arise? If so, then the second answer is divided into a general display and a separate explanation, the first of which is: Although desire is a mental factor, so it is true that it is not generating bodhicitta, however, in the treatise "Generating bodhicitta is for the sake of others," there is the fault of saying that desire is generating bodhicitta. Thus, connect it. The reason for this is: Because in this case, it relies on using the name of desire to approximately refer to generating bodhicitta. Because designation requires three conditions, the measure of refutation is what the debate itself shows. The second is divided into two: If the word "fundamental desire" is used specifically for the sake of the object of benefiting others, then it is establishing the name of the cause on the result; if it is used for the result, the object of enlightenment, then it is establishing the name of a friend on the one with a friend. In the first case, with the treatise "Generating bodhicitta is," as the subject, there is a reason to designate generating bodhicitta with the name of desire, because it is only through the cause, desire, that the result, generating bodhicitta, is shown. Why? If you ask why these two are cause and effect, then the desire in this case is: Seeing helpless beings drowning in the ocean of suffering, in order to save them, the thought of wanting to benefit oneself and others arises.
