The first bhumi, the Joyful One, is attained through ten such characteristic dharmas. Why is the first bhumi called the Joyful One? "Being close to enlightenment, and seeing the accomplishment of the meaning of sentient beings, great joy arises, therefore it is called the Joyful One." As it is said, the great joy of realizing the thusness that has never occurred before is called the Joyful One. Why are ten dharmas needed to attain the first bhumi? Because it is necessary to abandon all the faults of the first bhumi and to generate all the qualities completely. How is the special dharma of purification obtained? It is only through the special characteristic of complete purification, which is characterized by the non-apprehension of intrinsic nature in the ultimate sense. The second bhumi has two aspects. First, in the second bhumi, the perfection of morality is completely fulfilled, and by the power of complete purity of morality, the special purity of morality is obtained. The sutra says: "What is complete purity of morality? It is not to think of the mind of a hearer or a self-realizer..." and "Without other activities, one seeks the perfections. This is to strive and seek the perfections." The second is the explanation: By completely purifying the morality that gathers virtuous dharmas, accomplishes the benefit of sentient beings, and completely prevents unfavorable factors, one abandons the intention of hearers and self-realizers; one remembers even the small benefits done by others and does not let them be washed away by water; one does not retaliate for the harm done by others; one has no regrets for the practice of maturing sentient beings, etc.; one is willing to go to hell for a long time for the sake of one sentient being, and in this way one loves all beings; one respectfully bows without arrogance to all virtuous people such as khenpos and acharyas; one practices with diligence as the essence of the meaning taught by the virtuous friend; without other activities, one rejoices in the six perfections such as generosity, and one is completely purified in eight ways, which is called the second bhumi. Why is it called the Immaculate One? "Because it is free from the stain of immoral conduct, it is called the Immaculate Bhumi." As it is said, by the morality of

Because of the perfection of giving, it is not defiled by the stain of promiscuity. How is it completely purified? Just as it was said in the first ground, it is distinguished by the difference of being completely purified by being grasped by non-attachment wisdom. The third ground is divided into two parts. The first part is the root: Never being satisfied with hearing. Thus it is said. The bodhisattva dwells on the third ground and should dwell on the five dharmas. What are the five? Never being satisfied with hearing many dharmas, and not being attached to the letters. Thus it is said. The second part is the explanation: Wanting to uphold the sacred dharma spoken by all the Buddhas, one does not know satisfaction from listening to the sacred dharma. Without looking at gain and respect, etc., one extensively teaches the sacred dharma with a compassionate heart. The dharmas that purify the field are completely dedicated there, so that one's own Buddha field, as the container of the dependent world and the sentient beings who depend on it, are purified of all faults. Seeing the faults of disharmony and other samsaric faults because sentient beings who have benefited from oneself harm in return, one is never weary of benefiting others. In relation to oneself, one does not do the attention of the hearers and self-realizers, etc., and has a sense of shame. In relation to others, one does not do such non-virtuous dharmas, and has a sense of embarrassment. Through these five purifications, it is called the third ground. Why is it called the radiating ground? Because it is the great manifestation of the dharma. Thus it is said. By the power of samadhi, it brings the manifestation of the dharma to oneself and others. How is it completely combined? Just like before. The fourth ground is divided into two parts, the root is: Because it is separated from the attention of the hearers and self-realizers, it dwells in the forest. Because there is no desire for the enlightenment to be obtained through the combination of things, it is of little desire. Even if a special object is obtained, it is not pursued, so it is contentment. Not abandoning the forbearance of realizing certainty in the profound dharma, etc., the qualities of training are perfectly completed. For all dharmas, there is no manifest action, and one is liberated from wrong views. These are all in accordance with the sutra, as explained by the great commentary. In the explanation, it is explained in accordance with the literal meaning of the treatise. The sutra is:
