Although both the subject and the sign are similar in that they are not directly establishing (the probandum), there is a difference in whether or not they establish (the probandum) indirectly. For example, that (sound) is the subject, even through indirect means, it does not have the ability to establish the probandum, because what is to be established is merely the impermanence of sound. When stating the reason, the sign of establishing the impermanence of sound is the subject, which is approximately designated or indirectly designated as the establisher of the impermanence of sound. Although it does not have the ability to directly establish the impermanence of sound itself, it is because it is the language that can show the three aspects of directly establishing the impermanence of sound. Through this reasoning, (you) also do not consider the teacher's statement of the subject to be an establisher through indirect means. The teacher Dignāga (Dharmakīrti) is the subject, the statement of the subject is not considered to be an establisher even through indirect means, because you say that the statement of the subject merely states the subject that does not have the ability to establish the probandum. Which word is it? "Indicating that which is to be measured, it is considered to be the meaning of the reason." That is what that word says. If not only the sign, but also the statement of the subject has the ability to establish the probandum, because the words of the reason are used in reliance on it. Then, the opponent, because of doubting whether sound is permanent or impermanent, wants to determine whether sound is permanent or impermanent through reason, when asking the question, the proponent wants to establish the reason for establishing the impermanence of sound, so in the occasion of establishing the syllogism, etc., all are the subject. It becomes a part of the argument for establishing the impermanence of sound, because the words for establishing the impermanence of sound are used in reliance on you. If the proponent's words are a part of the argument, then doubt, etc., will not become that. When the proponent says "sound is permanent," even when admitting the side that contradicts the impermanence of sound, it is also the subject. You cannot avoid becoming a part of the argument for establishing the impermanence of sound, because it would become too extreme. Because the proponent's words that use the sign for establishing the impermanence of sound in reliance on you are the same. The reason for that is, when the proponent says to the opponent for the sake of refuting, "sound is permanent," the opponent will have doubt about the permanence of sound, and in order to dispel that doubt, (the sign) for establishing the impermanence of sound (is used).
