Explanation of Chapter Four from 'The Wish-Fulfilling Intellect'. Explanation of Chapter Four from 'The Wish-Fulfilling Intellect'. Thus, having presented the chapter on direct perception, which demonstrates the characteristics of valid cognition, it would be appropriate to explain inference for oneself next. However, due to its necessity, it has been explained earlier. Here, as the occasion arises, for the sake of helping those children who, although they understand the object to be proven from the three-aspects of the sign of the proponent himself, are not skilled in showing it to others, the teacher says: "Inference for others makes what one has seen very clear." This explains the definition of inference for others. The condensed meaning of that text is: Just as the knowledge of the subject possessing the sign arises from the three-aspects of the sign seen by the proponent himself through valid cognition, so too, it is desired that knowledge of the subject possessing the sign arises in the mindstream of others from the three-aspects of the sign seen through valid cognition. Therefore, the speech that clearly shows the three-aspects of the sign seen by the proponent himself through valid cognition to the opponent is what is meant by "inference for others." Why is speech inference? Because it is named after the effect of the cause. If it were sufficient to say that "showing the three-aspects of the sign is inference for others," why mention "seen by oneself"? This is because, in order to show the object to be proven to the opponent, even if the proponent himself has not seen it through valid cognition, the meaning seen only from the opponent's scriptures can become a correct probans. For example, when the proponent, a Samkhya, states to the Buddhist opponent: "Intelligence and happiness, the dharma, are not mind, because they are produced and destroyed." This sign of being produced and destroyed is not established by valid cognition in the Samkhya's own system, but because it is established by the Buddhist's scriptures, it becomes a probans. Some Gelug scholars think this way. Therefore, in order to abandon the misconception that even if the proponent himself has not established it through valid cognition, the meaning established only through the opponent's scriptures is also a correct sign, and to show that if it is inference for others, it must be speech that clearly shows the three-aspects of the sign established by the proponent himself through valid cognition to the opponent, the words "seen by me" are mentioned in the definition of inference for others. If...

Why doesn't a phenomenon established only by the scriptures of an opponent, without being established by the proponent's own valid cognition, become a reason? If you say, "I uttered the words 'what I see' in order to eliminate that," then, knowable phenomena, it follows that a phenomenon established only by the scriptures of an opponent, without being established by the proponent's own valid cognition, does not become a valid reason for establishing what the proponent desires, because it is unreasonable to consider the mere words themselves as valid cognition where the force of reality enters and the power of inference operates. If the reason is not established, then in that place where the force of reality enters and the power of inference operates, it follows that the force of reality and the inferences do not become meaningful when you measure and establish them, because you are established only by the words of the proponent's assertion, and the examples and reasons where the force of reality enters become meaningless for you to establish. Furthermore, knowable phenomena, it follows as before, because it is reasonable to accept that scripture, which has been thoroughly examined by the proponent's own valid cognition regarding the meaning of the scripture and is completely purified by valid cognition, as a valid cognition for establishing some of the phenomena that the proponent desires to establish. Furthermore, if one establishes that the bliss of arising and ceasing is without mind, if the Buddhist accepts the scripture, then it is reasonable for the Buddhist to accept the phenomenon established only by the scripture as the reason for establishing that phenomenon. However, because the Buddhist did not accept the scripture at that time, the one who shows that the phenomenon established only by the scripture does not become the reason for establishing that phenomenon for the Buddhist, Buddhist, it follows that the scripture that shows bliss as the bliss of arising and ceasing is not valid cognition for you either when establishing that the bliss of arising and ceasing is without mind, because at that time, in order to refute the scripture that shows bliss as the bliss of arising and ceasing in your mind, you say that other bliss is without mind, and you speak the correct reason. If you accept, it follows that the subject-property and the object to be proven are not completely established by the scripture that shows bliss as the bliss of arising and ceasing, because it is what is accepted. Therefore, if whatever is accepted by any proponent, only that which corresponds to that scripture, that scripture is established as valid cognition, so bliss
