It becomes a part of the subject of proof, so it should not be a distinguishing characteristic. Because at that time, the subject does not perform the function of representing the sound of effort. Because when measuring the established homogeneity, when measuring with inference, the subject, the sound of effort, has already performed the function of understanding, that is, representing, so you are contradictory. Furthermore, if it is thought that what is heard is also not established as homogeneity, then the distinguishing characteristic, what is heard, is also the subject. Taking one part of the meaning of the proposition establishing sound as impermanent as the reason, it should not be a reason that is not established. Because sound and dharma, that is, contradiction, are different. These show the characteristics of the proposition to be established, in order to show the way of establishing a valid reason that precedes the differentiation of homogeneity. In the Compendium, it says: Why is it that most of the appearances of valid reasons, etc., are of the nature of homogeneity? Therefore, before the meaning of valid reasons, etc., their differences should be explained. Homogeneity has existence and non-existence, and each of the two has three aspects. Heterogeneity also has two aspects of existence and non-existence. And so on. If it is said that when showing the statement of proof, why should the differences of homogeneity be explained? Because the differences of homogeneity summarize the meaning of the timely reason, which is reasonable. Because it is for the purpose of easily grasping the vast meaning of the differences between valid and seemingly valid reasons with a small number of words. If it is said that if the reason is a distinguishing characteristic that is distinguished by the subject to be established, then will the subject follow others? The reason is distinguished by that subject with a non-possessive exclusion, not distinguished by a possessive exclusion, so there is no fault. Then, are there many exclusions? Yes, because the words of the dharma, such as "only" and "self," etc., make the exclusions different due to the different places of determination. Therefore, for example, like "only that which has smoke has smoke," the distinguishing dharma and the determination of "only" are linked together, which is to make a non-possessive exclusion. For example, like "only sound is what is heard," the distinguished subject and the determination of "only" are linked together, which is to make a possessive exclusion.

It distinguishes, and like saying "only a cow can give birth to a calf," expressing the limitation of "only" together with the action distinguishes extremely impossible things. If distinction can be understood even without actually attaching a limitation, then is it possible? Yes, for example, the statement "there is only water in the vase," even though the limitation "only the vase can hold water" is not actually attached, its meaning can be understood, because the speaker intends to express it that way, so it is a statement attached in that way. Because speech has the effect of distinguishing the contradictory results intended by the speaker. For example, the three types of distinctions are like "only the black one is good at jumping," which distinguishes that being good at jumping does not belong to black; or "only existence is good at jumping," which distinguishes that being good at jumping belongs to existence; or like "only a sea-born can turn blue," which distinguishes that blue is extremely impossible for a sea-born. If the statement "only the black one is good at jumping" distinguishes that black is not good at jumping, then it would also distinguish generosity, etc., because they are not the objects of expression of that statement and are different in meaning from that statement. Understanding the three types of distinctions from speech, the expressing words are the dharma, and only distinguishing the contradictory opposites intended by the speaker can one understand their own meaning, because that is how it is understood in the world, and the reason is that one can only understand the meaning of distinguishing the contradictory meaning intended by the speaker, and cannot understand other meanings, because speech follows the expressing intention of the self-prover to show meaning. Because there are three types of distinctions, from the perspective of distinguishing what is not possessed, the dharma that is the basis of distinction, that is, the dharma that is the characteristic, is distinguished by the dharma, so the dharma with the characteristic distinguished by this dharma is dependent on the fault of having no subsequent following in the example. Through these, after pointing out avoiding arguing about the name of the side dharma, it shows the necessity of explaining the differences in characteristics. Why does it become a side dharma?
