Furthermore, because you need to demonstrate the power of your argument in order to prove (your point), it is through this very force that you, as the opponent, realize that the point to be proven is not yet established. For if you, as the opponent, had already accepted (the point to be proven), then presenting your argument would be meaningless. Moreover, regarding the example, sign, and subject that are being presented as the means of proof, when you are presenting them as the means of proof, it is necessary to mention the qualification of "only" in the definition of the proposition in order to explain that it is something to be proven. For at that time, the opponent would not have any doubt as to whether it is something to be proven. Because at that time, you are encompassed by the definitions of example and reason, etc., and therefore are not of the same category as the point to be proven. Therefore, if one says, "Only showing the point to be proven is the proposition," and adds the qualification of "only" before the proposition, then the rational person would consider it meaningless to state the definition of the proposition, because there is no need for distinction in the definition. Because it is meaningless to add the qualification of "only" before the proposition, it can be inferred that it is necessary to say, "Showing the point to be proven is only the proposition," and therefore the qualification of "only" is pervasive and can be understood as having the result of four mutually exclusive distinctions. If it is not so, then the fault of the unestablished example and sign becoming the point to be proven remains. Now, intending to prevent the faults of the proposition from other perspectives, in the Compendium it is said: "To speak to a rational person, a reason that contradicts the proposition, is not reasonable to be called a fault of the proposition. Those who have not studied well, will cite that as a dissimilar example." Now, explaining this: A rational person says, "Sound is the subject, it is permanent, because everything is impermanent." Like this, if one says that the reason contradicting the proposition is the meaning of the proposition, that is not reasonable. The meaning of the reason contradicting the proposition is also that the reason is not related to the point to be proven of the desired object. And what is that? The reason does not help the point to be proven of the desired object, or it contradicts the proposition by the power of the argument, or the reason and the dharma and subject of the point to be proven of the desired object cannot coexist, and therefore it contradicts the proposition. It does not go beyond these two situations. If the first is the case, then all the faults of the unestablished, uncertain, and unproven reasons would become the faults of the proposition, and that is also unreasonable, because

If the fault of the tenet does not depend on other examples and reasons, then it has already been explained in detail before. In the second case, if the object to be established as a reason, the dharma to be established and the subject do not exist together, then this is not a fault of the tenet, because the reason is not established. Furthermore, sound is the subject, it is permanent, because everything is impermanent. If this syllogism says that the impermanence of sound is the reason, then sound will have the reasoning of impermanence, so that the reason of impermanence will contradict the permanence of sound. However, such a syllogism does not say that the subject, sound, has the reasoning of impermanence, because the reason of everything being impermanent is only to show the similarity of examples that contradict the permanence of sound. Apart from that, what other meaning can you see? Because there is none. Establishing that tenet, that subject, sound is not pervaded by impermanence, because the difference of everything is that sound specifically excludes other permanent dharmas, and then says that everything is impermanent, this general statement is only said after the exclusion of permanent dharmas. If it is not so, what is the need for you to say that the general statement that everything is impermanent is said after the exclusion of permanent dharmas? Because there is no need, because you have already included sound in impermanence. Therefore, the teacher said that the impermanence that exists in sound itself excludes sound being permanent. Therefore, the subject sound is said to be not everything from everything, because if it is said that sound is not everything, then other things relative to sound contradict the permanence that everything has. In this way, as a reason for establishing that sound is permanent, does the proponent put forward not all knowable things, or does he put forward not all sounds? If it is the former, sound is the subject, not all knowable things, this also cannot be your reason for establishing permanence, because the general all knowable things do not negate the particular. If the general negates the particular, for example, sometimes when asked if the sal tree itself is a tree, the answer is that the sal tree itself is not a tree.
