Because if harm is done to the subject of the proposition, it will also harm the proposition to be established, which is a matter that has been established and understood. Therefore, knowable things, because they harm the subject of the proposition, will harm the proposition to be established. Because if the subject of the proposition's basis is contradictory, that is, is prevented, then the proposition to be established that relies on it will also be contradictory, that is, prevented. Therefore, because one mentions the self-basis, if one does not mention others, some may think that only harm to the dharma of the proposition to be established is harm to the proposition to be established, because in the context of the definition of the proposition, it is said that the dharma of such a form that the opponent accepts is to be established. Therefore, in order to eliminate this thought, in order to understand that if harm is done to the subject of the proposition, harm will be done to the proposition to be established, one's own subject of the proposition is mentioned. If harm to the subject of the proposition causes harm to the proposition to be established, is this not also established by the meaning of saying "self" in the definition of the proposition? It is indeed established in this way, but it is also admitted that preventing certain things that are not distinguished by the opponent's acceptance also has the fault of preventing the proposition to be established. For example, the Lokayata (Carvaka) school believes that space and time, etc., are permanent dharmas, while Buddhists say that space and time, etc., are not permanent things that cannot be newly produced by other causes and conditions, because they are not the cause of the simultaneous manifestation of sound and time, etc. To this, the Lokayata school refutes: By preventing the permanent thing with the cause of emptiness that acts simultaneously, it will also establish that the nature of the subject of the proposition itself, such as space and time, is also non-existent, and therefore it will become the fault of preventing the proposition to be established. If this is the case, then the dharma of emptiness that acts simultaneously, because it prevents the real space, you should not think that your cause of establishing space and time, etc., as empty and permanent is contradictory. Because by preventing it, you have not caused any harm to the proposition to be established of that object. For example, for self-basis...

This passage means that since the collection of both the dharma and the dharmin under discussion is what needs to be established, any harm to the dharmin under discussion will lead to the negation of the dharma to be established. Therefore, it is said that harming the current dharmin harms the dharma to be established. Therefore, know that if only the dharmin that is not distinguished by the opponent's intention is harmed, then the inference is invalid, because the dharmin that is distinguished by the opponent's intention and possesses the dharma to be established is itself what needs to be established. If harming the current dharmin harms the current dharma to be established, then this argument presented by the Buddhist to the Samkhya school has a flaw. What is this argument? Namely: pleasure, pain, and ignorance, etc., are not permanent substances that cannot be produced by other causes, because they are simultaneously the cause of all effects such as sound. When this argument is presented, the Samkhya school refutes it like the previous Vaisheshika school, saying that because it acts simultaneously, this emptiness argument, while negating the permanent substance, also negates your own dharmin—impermanent dharmas such as pleasure, thus causing the fault of negating the dharma to be established. If it is said that the dharmin—impermanent dharmas such as pleasure—must contradict the emptiness of acting simultaneously as a reason, then this will contradict the dharma to be established. However, these are not contradictory, because the reason acts gradually, that is, it is not the direct cause of effects such as sound simultaneously, which is considered a remainder to prove that the dharmin—impermanent dharmas such as pleasure—is unreal. This is because you doubt whether it contradicts the similar class that establishes it, because you and impermanence itself are not contradictory. To summarize the meaning of this passage: the word "self-dependent" indicates that harming the support of the dharma to be established—the dharmin—will harm the dharma to be established, while merely irrelevant dharmin, or harming the support of other dharmas—the dharmin—will not harm the dharma to be established. This is because during the debate, a certain dharma that the opponent himself desires is the dharma to be established on the current dharmin.
