If it is just something to be proven, Bhadrihari says: 'Having knowledge and external objects, and also one's own essence, they are understood by the expression of sound, and are generally well established in relation.' That is to say, the expressive sound makes one understand the knowledge one wants to express, the external object expressed, and the essence of the sound itself. For example, when saying 'Go-bo', one understands the intention to express, the cow, the language, and ओ (Tibetan, Devanagari: ओ, IAST: o, literal meaning: o) and उ (Tibetan, Devanagari: उ, IAST: u, literal meaning: u), etc. Therefore, those who say that sound has distinctions claim that both the sound of a class like 'cow' and the sound of a name like 'Devadatta' have external meaning before convention, but do not have the meaning of their own essence. Those who say that sound has no distinctions say that the sound of a class is the same as before, and the sound of a name does not have external meaning, but has the meaning of its own essence before convention. Then, those who say that sound has no distinctions say to those who say that sound has distinctions: The sound of a name, as the subject, has meaning before the convention in which the name and the named object are related in a different way, because it has any of the eight cases of sound. When this is stated, the proponent who says that sound has no distinctions does not accept that the reason, the sound of a name, has external meaning, so you are trying to prove that it has external meaning. Because you either want to prove that the sound of a name has the meaning of its own essence, or you want to prove that it has external meaning, but you do not prove that it has the meaning of its own essence. You do not prove that the sound of a name has the meaning of its own essence, because you have not explicitly said that the meaning of its own essence is what you want to prove. Or, the collection gathered by 'or', as the subject, you Buddhists, in your minds, use the eyes, etc., merely as a reason to benefit others, which will become fruitless, because Buddhists have not forgotten that the eyes, etc., exist merely for the benefit of others. Therefore, even if it is not explicitly stated in words, what is intended in the mind is what is to be proven, so proving the opposite of this, and an incomplete reason, contradict what is intended to be proven, and will become a fault of the dharma to be proven not following in the example. This reasoning of refuting faults with the reason that the eyes, etc., of the Samkhyas exist merely for the benefit of others can also be used to refute the view of the Charvakas who do not acknowledge past and future lives.

If one wishes to establish something, one makes a false statement like this: a pot, as the subject, exists in conjunction with either a body or a pot, because it is not a lotus, like a wall. By arranging a statement that includes these two, one also points out the faults of the example of the dharma to be established not following, and the reason contradicting the object of desire to be established. If someone says that they do not wish to establish such a conjunction of either body or pot, but rather wish to establish the generality of such a conjunction, so there is no fault, then: the pot itself, as the subject, does not establish the generality of the conjunction of either body or pot, because you, the pot, have no other meaning than that body, and such a body will not become a different meaning from you. Therefore, the pot and the generality of the conjunction of either body or pot have no other meaning, yet to say that it exists is a term used by those who exaggerate, which, as the subject, is caused by the prejudice of not understanding the reality of things, because it is a term that expresses emptiness. If one can distinguish and recognize that the impermanence of sound as the subject does not follow the pot, and the impermanence of the example pot does not follow the sound as the subject, then your establishing sound as impermanent by its being made will also be the same as arranging a statement that includes the two faults of the dharma not following and the reason contradicting. If someone says that the made, as the subject, the impermanence of sound and pot do not follow each other, therefore your establishing sound as impermanent, the example of the dharma to be established does not follow, and the fault of the reason contradicting the thing to be established is not so. Because you have established that the generality that both sound and pot follow is merely destruction, therefore sound also only has the generality of impermanence, you have established it as such. Therefore, the generality of impermanence that both sound and pot follow, if there is another meaning of the generality of the conjunction of either body or pot in the pot, then it will have the conjunction of either body or pot, but in reality, there is no other meaning of the generality of the conjunction of either body or pot. If the generality is merely impermanence, as the subject, sound
