If it is said that the very assertion that what is seen by the combiner is a dharma of substance is a fault, this fault does not exist because the general characteristic that depends on objects such as pots is a directly perceived object like form, etc., and is therefore not established as a dharma of substance. Rather, it is because the general perception arising from the habit established by the direct perception that grasps the self-characteristic of the object goes before, and only knows and clings to that object as a dharma of substance, that it is established as a dharma of substance. Thus, since the general does not exist in the object, there is no other means of valid cognition capable of performing a function other than the self-characteristic, so the characteristic of the self is the subject. You alone are the means of valid cognition to be examined by the seeker of the result, because for those with discriminating minds who examine whether the result to be sought exists or not, the object to be sought is that, since it is established only from you. If that is the case, then it contradicts the statement that the two characteristics are means of valid cognition, since the means of valid cognition is said to be twofold: self-characteristic and general characteristic. The teacher Dignāga, the subject, does not assert that the means of valid cognition is twofold, self-characteristic and general characteristic, because there exists a self-sustaining general characteristic other than the self-characteristic. Rather, it is because the self-characteristic is realized by direct perception through the door of directly appearing its own essence, and inference is realized by clinging to the apprehended aspect of another self-characteristic, that he asserts that the means of valid cognition is twofold, self-characteristic and general characteristic. If it is said that the cognizer, the valid cognition, cognizes in two ways, so it exists in two ways, if the non-erroneous cognizer cognizes in two ways, then it is reasonable to exist in two ways, but the second cognizer, inference, is considered to be mistaken with respect to its own appearing object, because the meaning that inference manifestly clings to as it is does not become established as it is clung to. If it is said that inference, the subject, should not obtain the self-characteristic, because it does not realize its own essence as it is, but realizes it by the essence of another, from the refutation, it is obtained because it is realized through the door of appearing its own essence as it is. Inference, the subject, should not be a valid cognition, because it is mistaken. From the refutation, it is not mistaken, so it is a valid cognition. Inference, the subject, although it is mistaken, is still a valid cognition, because with respect to its object of engagement in the meaning of thought, it is non-deceptive. The first consequence is uncertain, because even if the self-characteristic is not directly realized, it is not not obtained.

Therefore. Because it is seen that even by merely fixating on the light of a jewel as a jewel, apart from the appearance of the jewel's own characteristic, one can comprehend and obtain the jewel's own characteristic. The first Svātantrika is uncertain, because even if the own characteristic is obtained, it is not comprehended from actually appearing. Because regarding this aspect of comprehension, it has already been answered with "having sense faculties, results," and so on. The way to show that the latter two Svātantrikas are uncertain is: Just as the two minds that manifestly rush towards the light of a jewel and the light of a lamp, etc., with a mind that fixates on them as jewels, are subjects. You two are the same in being non-different in the mistaken cognition of fixating on what is not a jewel as a jewel, but there is a difference in accomplishing the meaning of obtaining the jewel's own characteristic, because you two have a difference in being connected and unconnected indirectly from the jewel's own characteristic, respectively. Therefore, in this way, the subsequent inference of comprehending sound as impermanent, is a subject. You and the imputation of fixating on sound as permanent that appears in that subsequent inference are the same in being without meaning as you yourself fixate, but you are established as valid cognition, because that does not have a connection to the object of engagement, but your own object of engagement is connected to accomplishing meaning and is non-deceptive. Thus, because universals do not exist in things, the object to be measured is considered to be twofold: own characteristic and universal, through the way of comprehending own characteristics. Having shown this, now, because the object to be measured is determined to be twofold: own characteristic and universal, therefore, cognition is also determined to be twofold: direct perception and subsequent inference. The way to show this is: Whatever object, from the power of the meaning of what is apprehended, the mind that goes and stops according to the existence or non-existence of the object, the object that is engaged as a measurer, is a subject. It is manifest, because the mind that engages itself as the apprehender does not rely on sound conceptualization, but engages by the power of the object itself. Other than that which engages as a direct perceptual measurer, the nature of the entity that is not seen by direct perception, the object that engages as a subsequent inferential measurer, is a subject. It is a sense faculty, that is, the hidden that is beyond the realm of direct perception, because the basis or means of your comprehension is a reason with three aspects of a different entity, and it is not reasonable to be otherwise. The reason of smoke, etc., that is accepted as the basis for comprehending the hidden, if the pervasion of the homogeneous class that is connected to the subject that is the basis of the probandum and the probandum
