Explanation of the Third Chapter from The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel of Reasoning Explanation of the Third Chapter from The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel of Reasoning Thus, the teacher first explained the cause for teaching the treatise, which is inference for one's own benefit, and after that, he explained the homage of the treatise. Now, in order to explain the body that shows the characteristic of valid cognition, which is appropriate at this time, he said, "Because the object to be measured is two," and so on. Here, there are four misconceptions about valid cognition, the characteristic of valid cognition, and the treatise that shows it, namely, misconceptions about the number of valid cognitions, their characteristic, their scope, and their result. Among them, some say that only direct perception is valid cognition, and inference is not valid cognition, and that there are other valid cognitions such as sound-born and near-measurement. In order to dispel the misconception about number, it is said that valid cognition with the characteristic of being non-deceptive is only the two, direct perception and inference, and not more or less than that. Because inference, which will be explained in the manner to be explained, is also valid cognition, and there is no reason for valid cognition to become many. The latter reason is established. If valid cognition becomes many, is it because there are many objects to be measured, or because many valid cognitions also engage with one object to be measured? First, the former is not reasonable, because the object to be measured is determined to be the particular and the universal. If, like a blue lotus, there is a third object to be measured that is a mixture of the particular and the universal, then the reason is not established. The object to be measured, the subject, is not a third object to be measured that is a mixture of the particular and the universal, because ultimately it is determined to be either able to perform a function or not able to perform a function. If, for someone with impaired vision, the hair streaks and double moons that appear are not particulars because they cannot perform a function, and they do not appear clearly and do not follow, so they are not universals either, then the reason is not established. For someone with impaired vision, the hair streaks and double moons that appear, the subject, are not objects to be measured by valid cognition, because the one who names them has no intention or attachment to them as objects to be measured by valid cognition. Because one's own nature cannot perform a function, and you engage with it, clinging to it as an object, so you do not obtain an object that is in accordance with it. The object to be measured, the subject, there is no third collection of objects to be measured other than the particular and the universal, because similar common and un-
