Because it is determined as both similar and dissimilar, and because it is determined as both the real object and the non-real object of the expressing word, and because when other causes besides its own object of apprehension, such as self-cause designation, effort, and the general characteristics corresponding to it, exist, then its own consciousness possessing the object exists, and when other dominant conditions besides its own object of apprehension, such as mind, exist, but the external object does not exist, then its own consciousness does not exist, because it is determined as both. Why is it that because it is determined as being able to function and not being able to function, etc., the object to be measured is determined as both the self-characteristic and the general characteristic? Because in the ultimate sense, being able to function, and abiding in a unique way, and not being the real object of the expressing word, and even though other causes besides its own object of apprehension exist, its own consciousness possessing the object does not exist, etc., whatever exists, in this treatise it exists in the ultimate sense. Other than that, not being able to function in the ultimate sense, etc., exists in the conventional sense, and those that exist in the ultimate and conventional senses, we explain them in order as the nature of the self-characteristic and the nature of the general characteristic. If some Madhyamikas think that being able to function in the ultimate sense is not reasonable as the nature of the self-characteristic, because all things do not have the ability to function in the ultimate sense. Seeds and fire, etc., are the subject, it should not be that they do not have the ability to function in the ultimate sense, because the ability to benefit sprouts and smoke, etc., is actually seen. If it is thought that those producing those are acknowledged in the conventional sense, but not in the ultimate sense. Those are the subject, how it is established as functioning in the conventional sense, it will be established in that way, but it is definitely not not functioning, because from the wise to the child, it cannot be denied, and it is actually seen that it produces sprouts and smoke, etc. If it is acknowledged that it is established in that way, then all self-characteristics and general characteristics have the ability to function, therefore the nature of the self-characteristic is confused. The nature of the general characteristic is the subject, it is not even the function of producing merely the consciousness of self-grasping, because even though the eye and ear and the corresponding attention, etc., exist, but when blue color, etc., does not exist, its consciousness possessing the object does not arise, and just as when it is near, its consciousness arises, for the consciousness of self-grasping, as its benefactor, the sequence of existence and non-existence

Because coming and going are not seen, it is said that the general apprehension does not arise from general activities. This refers to the substance of a vase, the actions of lifting and placing the vase, and the generality of the vase itself, as well as the numbers such as one and two, and the discriminating mind towards case endings, etc., which are the subject. If the opponent says that it does not arise from the perceived object such as a clay vase, as imagined by the Vaiśeṣikas, then the explanation is given: Because it follows the internal parts such as its own cause, the indication, the effort, and the attention that accords with it, in terms of acceptance and rejection. If it is said that hair, etc., also become general, because there is a faint other cause besides the perceived object, if there is one, and because it cannot perform a function. Then the definition of generality is confused, if it is said, then the sense consciousness that sees hair, etc., falling out, is the subject. The strands of hair, etc., that appear to you are not the general that you cling to and measure, because there is no clinging to it as a meaning or object. If that is the case, then non-existent things will not become general either, if it is said, non-existent things are the subject. You do not cling to it as an object, so there will be no fault of becoming general, because you apprehend and cling to it as knowable through the means of exclusion. If that is the case, then the appearance of hair, etc., also becomes general, if it is said, the appearance of those hairs, etc., is the subject. When conceptual thought clings to external hair, etc., as such an object, it is general, because at that time conceptual thought does not prevent apprehending it as knowable. If hair, etc., are not external objects, why do they appear clearly? That, is the subject. Even though it is not an external object, it appears clearly, because it is the nature of knowledge, the nature of its own characteristic. The thoughts that cling to "this is external hair, etc.," are the subject. It is the object of generality, because it is the thought that analyzes the meaning. The eye consciousness that perceives hair, is the subject. It is devoid of meaning as it appears, because it is a deluded consciousness. If, because it is the nature of knowledge, that meaning is its own characteristic, then the general aspect of the vase that appears in the conceptual thought that apprehends the generality of the vase also becomes its own characteristic, if it is said, that, is the subject. There is no fault of becoming its own characteristic, because it is admitted as such.
