Because it is the consciousness that clings to words. Universally: Because it has been answered many times that sense consciousness does not directly associate the words expressing meaning with the objects it clings to. If sense consciousness sees objects with intervals, but subsequent conceptual thought connects objects without intervals. Then, objects such as form and their experiences, as well as sense consciousnesses, are the subject. Where does the statement "one's own object appears with intervals" come from? It is unreasonable, because there is no valid cognition that can harm the appearance of continuous non-interval with one's own object with valid reasoning. If there is a harmer, it is because all consciousnesses are experienced by other entities of consciousness that arise later than themselves. The reason for this is that there is an experiencer, but one does not experience oneself, and other entities of consciousness simultaneous with oneself do not experience either, because consciousnesses are determined to only produce their respective subsequent consciousnesses. If asked: What is the proof that consciousnesses are determined to only produce their respective subsequent consciousnesses? If it is said: Because it has not been seen that two consciousnesses arise simultaneously in the continuum of one person. Then, the fact that two consciousnesses have not been seen to arise simultaneously is itself the subject. It is not a valid reason to prove that two consciousnesses do not arise simultaneously in the continuum of one person, because whether two consciousnesses arise simultaneously in the continuum of one person is something that needs to be examined, and in this way, you also need to examine it in the continuum of one person. If there is a reason to establish it, because the sutra says: "It is not possible for two minds to arise simultaneously, because there is no opportunity." Then, such a scripture is the subject. It does not show that two consciousnesses do not arise simultaneously in the continuum of one person, because it only shows that the previous consciousnesses are determined to only produce their respective subsequent consciousnesses of the same kind as themselves. Therefore, knowables are the subject. These will definitely be determined in this way, because in this way, many conceptual thoughts are correctly recognized as arising in sequence, but not recognized as arising simultaneously. This shows that two similar consciousnesses do not arise simultaneously in the continuum of one person.

If any debater considers the discriminations that identify the meaning seen by direct perception as "that is this" as direct perception because the object appears clearly, then that assertion should also be refuted. If it were direct perception, then multiple cognitions of the same type would have to arise simultaneously in the continuum of one person, but that does not occur. There is another fault as well: the mind that identifies and discriminates hairs and lamps, etc., which are different in each moment, and two eggs seen by someone with blurred vision, etc., which are mutually different, as "this," has the property of being direct perception. It should be so, because you also have the appearance of a clear object, since it is knowing that the meaning previously seen by direct perception is "that is this." If you assert that, then how can such a mind, which has the property of being, be direct perception? It should not be, because it is an illusion that identifies two different things as "this." Therefore, the letters of the scriptures, such as A, I, etc., have the property of being. You are merely identified as one before and after, but there is no certainty of existing as one, because that which is identified as one before and after is not direct perception but an illusion. Such identification is not only not direct perception, but also not sense consciousness, as follows: the mind that identifies "the previous meaning is this" also has the property of being. How can it be a sense consciousness? It should not be, because when remembering a previously experienced meaning, you do not impose the qualities of the previous meaning on the later meaning. If two minds arise simultaneously, then are cognitions experienced by another substance, a cognition that is simultaneous with oneself? That is also unreasonable, because you also do not assert that the experience of objects such as form and the cognitions that grasp form, etc., arise simultaneously, and it is also unreasonable in terms of meaning. Because in the continuum of one person, there is no memory that separately understands the appearances of objects such as form and the cognitions that grasp form, etc., as "this is form" and "this is the cognition that grasps form." If the appearances of object and object-cognition are merely held by one mind with the same aspect that arises later than the mind itself, so they are not experienced as different, but are different in meaning, then blue, etc., appear as objects
