Furthermore, although the Lokayatas and skeptics do not accept yogic direct perception, according to the system of certain Vaibhashika scholars who accept yogic direct perception, that yogi who directly perceives the happiness and suffering of others' continuums, just by observing the happiness and suffering of others, will be immersed in happiness and tormented by suffering, just like a person who has happiness and suffering. Because experiencing the happiness and suffering of others, etc., with the yogic direct perception of one's own continuum is the same as the way a person with happiness and suffering experiences happiness and suffering. If you say that for those yogis, since there is no accumulation of causes of suffering such as disease, the suffering that arises from it arises from those (causes of suffering), then according to your view, experiencing suffering does not necessarily require the experiencer himself to be born as the nature of suffering, it is enough to just generate the consciousness that focuses on suffering, and the yogi also has this, so the fault of being tormented in the same way still exists. If you say that this fault is not the same for you, it is not the same, because merely observing the happiness and suffering of others, etc., is not the cause of torment and benefit, for the following reason: For the school that believes that consciousness has the aspect of an object, just by observing the happiness and suffering of others, a person with happiness and suffering will not be immersed in happiness or tormented by suffering. Because when the experiencer himself appears as the nature of suffering, it is torment, and merely observing suffering is consciousness, not experience. Therefore, observation does not pervade experience, therefore, knowable things, the observation and experience of all consciousnesses are different, because just as consciousness is similar to things, it is established as observing things, and just as consciousness itself appears as immersion, torment, etc., it is established as experiencing itself. For those who do not admit that their own mind is direct perception, there is another fault, that is, one's own mind must be realized through reasoning in one's own continuum, because there is no direct perception established in one's own continuum, but it is established through valid cognition. Here, in your own continuum you establish

Moreover, this thing that serves as a sign must be either the forms and other objects of the senses such as the eye, or consciousness itself, or the preceding mental activity; one of these three must be the case. Because your collection of causes and effects is limited to just these, and it is necessary to prove within your own continuum by means of a sign. If you assert that self and the meeting of mind, etc., are the collection of causes for consciousness, then, this subject, other than its own three conditions, there are no other things such as self and the meeting of mind, etc., that are related as its own collection of causes, because there is no seeing that these things have the ability to benefit you. Therefore, for the fourth permanent entity, the senses such as the eye, as a valid sign for establishing one's own consciousness within one's own continuum, is not valid, because they are deluded about their own consciousness. Objects such as forms are also the subject, for the same reason, because the senses similarly delude their own consciousness. Consciousness itself and mental activity are also the subject, for the same reason, because they are not established by valid cognition within their own continuum, because they are knowledge. Universally, that which is not established is not a valid reason for being a sign. If you assert that the sign is not merely the object itself, but the object's clarity as a sign, then is the consciousness that clarifies the object the sign, or is the object clarified by consciousness the sign? The first is not reasonable, because isn't the consciousness that clarifies the object itself knowledge? Since it is knowledge, it is not established by valid cognition. The second is also not reasonable, because by showing that the consciousness that clarifies the object is not a sign, it is refuted that the object clarified by consciousness is a sign, because the consciousness that clarifies the object is not experienced by valid cognition. If it is not established, then the object clarified by that consciousness is also not certain by valid cognition. However, if you assert that the clarity of the object is a particularity of the object itself, that some things that were previously unclear in the realm of consciousness later become clear, then, for external objects, there is no particularity whatsoever of being previously unclear in the realm of consciousness and later becoming clear, because there is no arising or ceasing. If you assert that there is a particularity of being previously unclear in the realm of consciousness and later becoming clear, then you will be destroyed in an instant, because self-grasping knowledge arises in each instant. If the particularity of the object that is asserted as a sign is the sign known by consciousness, or is the object not known by consciousness the sign? If it is the sign known by consciousness, then, for one's own continuum, where is that object called 'known by that consciousness' established by valid cognition? Because it is not established, because it is knowledge.
