Because if it appears as my object of apprehension, then all things will appear as their own object of apprehension, which would be a fault. If you say that even though sounds and so on, which are simultaneous with consciousness, do not benefit the self-character, they are necessarily apprehended as their own object of apprehension because they are of the same kind born from their own cause, then, if consciousness had the discrimination, 'This is of my causal kind, so it should be apprehended; others are not, so they should not be apprehended,' then such a determination would be reasonable. However, sense consciousnesses do not have such discrimination, so such a determination is not reasonable. Therefore, for the consciousness that apprehends sounds and so on, which are made by sounds and so on, it is reasonable to say, 'Even though those sounds and so on do not exist at its own time, it clearly sees those sounds and so on,' because it itself appears as the aspect of the object, sounds and so on. Other things, sounds and so on, that arise together with consciousness, do not produce an aspect in consciousness because they do not benefit it. If you assert that they do, then how could they appear as the object of apprehension of consciousness? They cannot appear because they do not produce an aspect in consciousness through the way of appearing with their own aspect. If you say that there are aspects for apprehending impermanent things like sounds and so on, but there are no aspects for apprehending permanent things like vajras and so on, then the meaning of things like diamonds and stones, which are considered to be permanent things, also, just as when producing the actual result of all things, the self-apprehending consciousness will be produced by itself all at once, because it produces it without relying on other conditions. If you say that even though they are permanent, the self-apprehending consciousnesses of these diamonds and so on arise sequentially because the conditions that arise simultaneously benefit them, then these diamonds and so on are different from each other in each previous and subsequent moment because they produce self-apprehending consciousness sequentially in dependence on conditions. If you assert that, then these diamonds and so on also do not actually appear to the self-apprehending consciousness because you have perished and do not exist at that time. Such faults are like what was said earlier, 'Who can make the unknowing clear?' and so on. These, through the teacher and one's own many reasonings, have established the two ways of intelligence, and now for later memory...

Furthermore, "The earth is also thus, two aspects and self-cognition are established, because without experience, this does not exist." This verse's Acharya's reasoning is also proven by others to be two aspects of consciousness. Some commentators say: "Previously, the object-consciousness with that consciousness," thus proving the two aspects of the object of consciousness and the consciousness; later, "from subsequent memory also," this proves the two aspects of consciousness-knowing and consciousness-known. That's what they say. This is unreasonable, like this: sense consciousnesses are the subject, in the view of the Vaibhashikas etc., it is not necessary to prove with forms etc. and "you consciousness-knowing consciousness-known" as a valid reason, because the Vaibhashikas etc. do not have appearances for forms etc., and there is no need to argue that it is not so because they experience it directly with their own nature. Therefore, because those necessities do not establish that consciousness is the nature of the object, that is, having aspects, it must be proven in their view. That is the subject, and it is also established in the having-aspects of the object, because the subsequent recollection of the correct meaning's understanding is distinct. Explaining that: if there is no aspect, that is the subject, this consciousness is like understanding form, not like understanding sound, your memory of distinguishing the understanding of meaning as distinct will disappear, because you have not experienced distinct aspects, because the respective objects of experience appear as distinct aspects, so there is no distinction of distinct aspects. If there is no aspect, but because the causes and faculties etc. are distinct, the understanding of meaning is distinguished as distinct, that is the subject, even if there is no aspect, you will not distinguish the understanding of meaning as distinct from some distinct causes and faculties etc., because your experience of all objects is only the same. If only the experience is the same, but because there are subtle differences, the understanding of meaning is remembered as distinct, that is the subject, even if you have subtle differences, there will be no consciousness of remembering to distinguish the understanding of meaning as distinct, because there is no clear experience of the difference of distinct aspects. For example, like two twin siblings and two eggs of a magician, even if there are subtle differences, they are not distinguished as distinct. Now, those Vaibhashikas etc. who think that consciousness itself is an aspect are contradictory.
