Because it is empty. It pervades. If you say that the consciousness possessing such unclear forms of form, etc., is actually produced from form, etc., then, that is the subject. The past meaning is not actually produced from form, etc., because it has ceased and does not exist when you exist. Furthermore, if you ask what is the reason why such recollection possesses form, and answer that it is because it is produced from past form, etc., then, for the sense consciousness experiencing form, etc., as well, it is the subject. That recollection will become like that, possessing the form of past form, etc., because it is produced from that. Such recollection is the subject. The form appearing to oneself is not made by the object form, etc., because it appears as an unclear form devoid of a clear form to oneself. If you say that the form appearing to it is an external meaning different from consciousness, then, the meaning of past form, etc., remembered by Devadatta is the subject. Other individuals residing in that self-object will also understand it in the same way that Devadatta understands it, because it is an external meaning other than Devadatta's consciousness. If you say that such Devadatta's own consciousness is always connected to the object, so there is no fault, then, such meaning is the subject. Even through verbal expression, other individuals will not understand it, because it is only the object of Devadatta's consciousness. If you say that the meaning understood by the two individuals who are teaching and listening is connected to the individual wisdom of each of the teaching and listening individuals, so there is no fault, then, such meaning is the subject. It will not be connected by the minds of the speaker and the listener into a nature that clings to the same meaning, because the individuals who are teaching and listening only understand the meaning connected to their respective wisdoms. If you say that the meaning understood by the two individuals who are teaching and listening is a different meaning, but because the forms are similar, there is a term that says it is the same, so there is no fault, then, the two individuals who are teaching and listening are the subject. The two different meanings will not appear and be grasped as the same one with similar forms, because the reason is

Because it grasps the distinct self-natures of different meanings individually. Therefore, the minds of those two should become devoid of self-nature in terms of what is grasped. It follows that they grasp two different meanings as one, because of that. The minds of those two individuals, how do they grasp two different meanings as different self-natures and not grasp them? Because two different meanings do not appear as different, but are grasped as one from the similarity of their aspects. If you accept that, then you become devoid of self-nature in terms of what is grasped. Because it also does not grasp different meanings as different, but grasps them as one. Now, the teacher says: 'By the knowledge of that object-knowledge, from the difference, it is just one principle.' That which establishes the mind as two principles by such reasoning, that is also the sense consciousness that experiences blue and so on. The mind itself is dependent on the two parts of grasper and grasped, because in that way, it is distinguished by one aspect grasped from itself, that is, it is cognized by the consciousness that remembers itself. The pervasion is established, if the consciousness itself is not possessed of the two parts of grasper and grasped, then how in the consciousness that remembers itself, would the grasper and grasped abide as two parts, that is, appear? Because it does not appear. The reason is also established, like this, object-consciousness and the memory-consciousness that remembers object-consciousness, the first and the second, etc., the later consciousnesses from the earlier consciousnesses, are each more advanced with one aspect of what is grasped. That is what is being explained, the second consciousness, the memory-consciousness that remembers the sense-consciousness that apprehends blue, is more advanced by one aspect of what is grasped than the sense-consciousness that apprehends blue, because the third consciousness, the memory-consciousness that remembers itself, cognizes it with two aspects of what is grasped, from the aspect of its own object, the meaning blue, and the nature of the sense-consciousness that apprehends blue, and some aspects of the self-grasping of consciousness. If it is said that because object-consciousness is the result of the object, if one remembers object-consciousness, then one should also remember the object, therefore, the mistaken consciousness mixes object-consciousness with the aspect of the object, that is, it only remembers and imputes, but there is no aspect? For the cause, appearance and attention, object-consciousness, you remember and impute with aspects.
