This term, which abides as the knowable, the knowing, and the result in the very nature of knowing, should also be applied in the Yogācāra system to all consciousnesses arising from firmly established habituations. How should it be applied? In that Yogācāra system, those consciousnesses such as attachment, etc., are things that consciousness can experience its own nature, because it is the nature of experiencing. Thus, because of that, consciousness itself is indeed the apprehending aspect that can be experienced. The apprehended aspect of the nature of valid cognition, self-awareness, is the result. The teacher said, "Self-awareness is valid cognition." Some, thinking of the term "self-awareness" as referring to the aspect of self-awareness, and eliminating the doubt that if self-awareness were valid cognition, valid cognition and result would become non-different, explained that in order to show the categories of valid cognition to those who assert consciousness. That which is called the apprehending aspect, which is the nature of completely determining the essence of consciousness itself, and that which is called the very nature of consciousness itself being able to be experienced, these are things that, for those who assert consciousness, self-awareness is the valid cognition that establishes it, because you establish these consciousnesses as objects of self-awareness. Therefore, the teacher Dignāga, did not explain self-awareness as valid cognition thinking of the aspect of self-awareness, but rather explained self-awareness as valid cognition thinking of the aspect of the apprehending aspect that completely determines its own essence. Thus, having eliminated the mistaken conceptions about valid cognition and result. Having prevented the Sarvāstivādins from wanting to grasp consciousnesses as being without aspects and directly encountering objects, in order to show that the mind itself is both the object and the manner of knowing, he said that all the consciousnesses of the five senses are things that, even though form, etc., and the other dependent mind, etc., are causes, they also change aspects, because by the nature of dependent origination, they will arise as the aspects of objects such as form, etc., because objects such as form, etc., arise from having been made into apprehended objects. For example, even though food, time, and the elements, etc., are the causes of giving birth to a child, that child will take on the form of one of the parents, but will not take on the aspect of other foods, times, etc. Furthermore, that thing, form, etc., and the other dependent mind, etc., and objects such as form, etc., you

Even if (eye consciousness, etc.) are the same in terms of cause, you consider form, etc., to be your object in terms of the part that follows the appearance of form, etc. Because form, etc., are your object, and without following the appearance of form, etc., form, etc., would not become your object. Furthermore, for consciousnesses such as eye consciousness that possess the self-characterized meaning of the apprehended object, there may be a need to apprehend through contact without the appearance of form, etc., as objects. However, for the conceptual thought of remembering that apprehends past objects such as form, etc., the nature of reality is: the mind itself is established as the way of object and knower, because the appearance of form, etc., as itself is established, and that is not a different object from itself. Therefore, it is also established as self-awareness. If it is said that the general characteristic of past form, etc., is the apprehended object of such a conceptual thought, and there is no appearance, then, this (conceptual thought) is characterized by: the category of past form, etc., should not be the apprehended object, because it appears as various different appearances of color, shape, etc., represented by blue, etc. This is pervasive, because the general characteristic does not possess the appearance of color, etc. Furthermore, is that category permanent or impermanent? If impermanent, then it will not act as a follower of the manifest; if permanent, then how could it be the cause of generating conceptual thought? It should not be the cause. If it is said that the name and sign of past form, etc., that is, non-associated compositional factors, are its apprehended object, and there is no appearance, then that is not correct. Because the eye, etc., of past form, etc., as entities other than consciousness, will not become meaningful things as before, etc., have already been refuted by correct reasoning. Furthermore, this way of the conceptual thought of remembering that apprehends past form, etc., is characterized by: it does not possess the apprehended object, because the function of the apprehended object is not established. Because it does not rely on the apprehended object, but is only related to intention and what follows it. If it is said that such a conceptual thought has no appearance, and the sense consciousness that experiences form, etc., also has no appearance, then, the knowable is characterized by: the conceptual thought of remembering that apprehends past form, etc., how could that thing possess the appearance of past form, etc.? It should not, because the sense consciousness that experiences form, etc., is also the appearance of the object form, etc.
