Because whatever is able to establish, only that is the understanding of meaning, because (they) consider that to be the excellent establisher of the establisher. Therefore, by generally denying that the senses etc. are valid cognitions, it is explained in order to separately deny them individually. It is unreasonable for the Vaibhashikas to consider the senses, which are corporeal valid cognitions, as the cause and the understanding of form etc. arising from them as the effect. The corporeal sense, as the subject, you—that is, you—do not have the ability to separately establish the understanding of meaning in this way, because all knowledge of understanding meaning is the same, that is, it is a common cause. If it is said that different senses that view different meanings can establish the understanding of meaning as different, then the sense of the eye, as the subject, even if there are different distinctions that view different meanings such as blue and yellow, but merely by this, there cannot be no same meaning, because for blue, yellow, etc., there is only no difference in cognition, this eye consciousness is understanding blue, this is understanding yellow, where does the establishment of the difference in understanding meaning come from? That is, it is impossible, because if there is no same meaning, then there will be no knowledge of viewing blue, yellow, etc. This reasoning that shows the harm to considering the senses as valid cognitions has also stated the harm to the remaining Samkhyas who consider the knowledge of viewing meaning as valid cognition, because the knowable, as the subject, it is also unreasonable to consider the knowledge of viewing meaning as the valid cognition of understanding meaning without the same meaning, because if there is no same meaning, then there will be no knowledge of viewing meaning. Furthermore, it is also unreasonable for the Vaisheshikas and Naiyayikas to consider the mind that holds distinctions, universals, etc. as valid cognition, and to consider the effect of the mind that holds objects with distinctions, because the mind of distinction that holds universals etc., as the subject, will also become non-different from the mind that holds objects with distinctions, because you are the mind that does not manifest the entity of that object, that is, the aspect. Those other minds that hold objects with distinctions, as the subject, will also be non-different from the mind of distinction that holds universals etc., because the mind of distinction is also the mind that does not manifest the aspect of its own object in the same way. If both are accepted, then those two, as the subject, are unreasonable as valid cognition and effect, because there is no difference. It is also unreasonable as the probandum and the probans, because it is a mind with different objects. This is pervasive, because both the to-be-proven and the prover do not accept that the object is different.

If those two are the same in meaning or object, then, the object of the differentiated mind that grasps universals, etc., has the property of being the object. The second object of the differentiated mind becomes a meaningless measure for you, because the function of cognition by the differentiated mind has not been lost. Those two have the property of being the object. It follows that you two cannot arise in succession, because you actually arise from one object of apprehension. If those two minds arise simultaneously, then the prover and the to-be-proven of the producer and the produced will not exist. If, according to your system, similarity and meaning-cognition are parts of one consciousness, and therefore arise simultaneously and are non-different, then it is not reasonable for them to be agent and object, if you say so. Similarities and meaning-cognitions that have become parts of one consciousness have the property of being objects. Even though they arise simultaneously and are ultimately non-different, they can be established as the to-be-proven and the prover, because the consciousness's cognition of meaning depends on the establishment of distinctions, and because you two are established as the to-be-proven and the prover of distinctions. Furthermore, it is unreasonable for the Vaibhashikas to assert that the cognition of form, etc., which arises from the valid cognition of the connection between the sense faculty and the object, is the result, because the eye faculty that grasps the form of the pot, even if it is connected to all the phenomena of impermanence, etc., which are the nature of the pot, without any difference, the eye-consciousness will only cognize some of the phenomena of the pot, and will not cognize all of them. If this is not the case, then the eye-consciousness that grasps the form of the pot has the property of being the object. It follows that the certainty that some of the phenomena of the pot are cognized and some are not will not change, because your eye faculty, which has become the valid cognition of meaning-cognition, is connected to all the phenomena of the pot without any difference. Since there is no difference in being connected to all those phenomena, then from what function does the meaning-cognition become different? That is precisely the valid cognition of this meaning-cognition, and that can only be meaning-similarity, otherwise it is unreasonable, as previously stated. If it is not meaning-similarity, but the consciousnesses arising from the aggregates of my qualities cause the meaning-cognitions to arise differently, and therefore it is able to establish the difference of meaning-cognitions, if you say so. Knowable things have the property of being objects. Without meaning-similarity, the consciousnesses arising from the aggregates of my qualities that cause the meaning-cognitions to arise differently are meaning-
