Because that which is experienced is not the knowing of the experience of the experiencer. If the knowing consciousness of experience does not experience the nature of happiness, etc., but cognizes and experiences the aspect of happiness, etc., which abides in the mind between the object and the faculty, then it is not certain. Apart from the direct experience of pricking pain, etc., and the knowing of experience that has the aspect of memory, whatever inert mind exists between this object and faculty should not exist. Because such an appearance is not observed. Therefore, I see that, depending on whether one likes it or not, etc., only a single knowing of experience, such as happiness, suffering, or indifference, will arise. Between the object and the faculty, as the subject, there is no inert mind other than experience, because such an appearance is not seen. If you say that although an iron ball and fire are different, when the iron ball becomes red-hot, it is inseparable from the fire, and likewise, although mind and experience are different, they are indistinguishable because they are mixed, then it is not certain, then, if different objects are also apprehended as one by the mind, and thus become one, then the distinction of "this is different and this is not different" for all objects will be lost, like this. All things, as the subject, the proof of difference is not established. Because the experience of non-difference by an unconfused mind is not the proof of oneness, because it is pervasive: if the experience of non-difference by an unconfused mind is one, then whatever is experienced as non-different is also established as having difference by experiencing it as different. Therefore, the Samkhyas, as the subject, how can there be no basis or proof for things being different and non-different? Although suffering and white, etc., appear as different to an unconfused mind, they are not different, while mind and experience, although they appear as non-different to self-awareness, are actually different. If you say that you also have one mind with many mental factors, so when one happiness, etc., appears clearly, the other mental factors, although they do not appear, are not non-existent, just like this, then, in the cycle of the mind, when one happiness, etc., is apprehended, just as the light of the sun suppresses the stars, because happiness, etc., are very clear, the other mental factors are obscured and cannot be seen, but in the stream of the distinctions of the mind, the establishment of many different mental factors is established.

Yes, because the mind manifestly engages with objects, and because of focusing single-pointedly on the object of attention, such as mental engagement, various different mental functions are seen. For example, like the clear stars in the late autumn night. For the experience of the mind, it is not possible to see such differences in continuity, so it is not the same. In the *Compendium of Topics*, it says, "Yogis, as taught by the guru, see only the unmixed meaning." Here, it explains yogic direct perception, that is, the wisdom of a yogi who combines calm abiding and insight is also direct valid cognition. How is it? Like the wisdom that directly realizes the suchness of the four truths, as explained in the second chapter earlier. The direct perception of those yogis is also the non-conceptual wisdom that arises from meditating on the true meaning, and it is unerring. How is it non-conceptual? Yogic direct perception, by its nature, appears as clear, because through the power of meditation, the net of conceptualization is completely cleared away. What is it like to appear clearly through the power of meditation? It is like being afflicted by desire, fear, and sorrow, and being disturbed by thieves, dreams, and bodily inversions, etc., one clearly sees unreal things as if they were present before one's eyes. Then, how is it non-conceptual in clear appearance? Clear appearance is non-conceptual, because the mind connected with conceptualization is not something that has a clear appearance of things. If it is said that there is a clear appearance in dreams, but that is conceptualization, then even in dreams, that conceptualization of memory is not a clear appearance, because when remembering the clarity of a lotus, the clear appearance is meaningless, unclear, and mixed. If it is said that in philosophical systems, it is not taught that there is clarity and non-conceptuality by meditating on unreal things, and here it is said that there is such a thing, is this not a contradiction of what is promised? There is no fault, because in the scriptures it is seen that the samadhi that is emanated and generated through the power of meditating on unpleasant things such as impure corpses and skeletons, and on unreal things such as the destruction of earth and water, is non-conceptual and has a clear appearance. Because it is so, impermanence and so on are real, and impurity and so on are unreal.
