Now, the previous consciousness is the subject. Why is it not the cause of the near attainment of pleasure and pain that transforms the unknowing into matter? Because it is not of the same kind as it. If it is said that it is not the cause of near attainment, but rather acts as a dominant condition, then there is no fault. It is also seen that the dominant condition bestows the benefit of pleasure and pain on contradictory self-results. For example, the rays of the sun are a dominant condition that is unfavorable for the root consciousness of owls and other creatures that move at night to see forms, while for other human beings and other root consciousnesses, it is a dominant condition that is favorable for seeing forms. Like this, it is uncertain. Pleasure and so on are not experienced by oneself but by other things. Therefore, pleasure and so on that are together with root consciousness manifest the form of things that have transferred their form to themselves, and because that form is experienced, it is established in the world as experiencing the form of things, but external things are not actually experienced. These pleasures and so on that are together with root consciousness are the subject. They are merely born from things, but they do not experience things, because they are able to recognize the form of things that have become their own nature. The nature of things, that is, the form of pleasure and so on, is experienced by the pleasure and so on that have become their own nature. Therefore, it is said that it experiences things, and the object of things is established only by way of appearing as the form of things. Some Samkhyas say that pleasure and so on are not internal, because they reside outside, and they are mindless matter, because they are the nature of audible sounds and so on that are to be grasped. If this is the case, not only the Vaisheshikas, but also according to that Samkhya's view, sound consciousness is the subject. It is unreasonable to simultaneously hold both sounds and so on and pleasure and so on as objects to be grasped, because the form of pleasure and so on does not appear. If it is said that blue and so on are of the same nature as pleasure and so on, so the two are held simultaneously by consciousness. Blue and so on and pleasure and so on are the subject. How can they not be different? Because for the form that appears as different, such as the form of color and shape and the form of coolness and heat, the non-deluded mind is a different object to be grasped. Furthermore, one person is connected with form...

The joy and complete suffering in the mind have properties. It is not an external object that becomes different through habit, because one person in the external world does not see any difference in observing that thing, but when two enemies and friends observe it, due to the difference in habit, it becomes joy and suffering such as like and dislike. If the happiness of the external world does not change due to habit, but just as sound etc. is self-nature, the mind is also the self-nature of happiness etc., so it is not contradictory that the self-nature of the mind, happiness etc., changes due to habit. If so, then this person has properties. How is it established by measurement that the external sounds etc. are the self-nature of happiness etc.? It cannot be established. Because what appears as the image of joy, pain, etc. is the mind, and there is no happiness etc. other than it. If the types are different, not what is taken and what can be taken, sounds etc. and happiness etc. are the same self-nature. Then, the sentient being has properties. It will not become the taker of all happiness etc. Because it is not the self-nature of happiness etc., because it is knowledge without merit. If you admit it, then the enjoyer of happiness etc. will disappear. The reason just mentioned is that if the mind and happiness etc. are of different types, they will not become what is taken and what can be taken, and if so, they will not become cause and effect, because they are cause and effect, so it refutes the saying that the two are of the same self-nature. How is it? Because the image of happiness etc. appears, if it is its fruit, then the person also has properties. It will become the fruit of happiness etc. Because its image appears. If it is not established, then the enjoyer will disappear. Also, the mind and happiness etc. have properties. You two are not the cause of establishing the image and the fruit of establishing the image. Because you two are not what is taken and what can be taken. If there is cause and effect because it is what is taken and what can be taken, then what is taken and what can be taken also exists in other people and happiness etc., so those two will also become cause and effect. To summarize those meanings, happiness etc. have properties. It is internal, because for the same thing in the external world, it becomes joy, suffering, etc. due to habit of like, dislike, etc. It is mind, because it is what is experienced. It is pervasive, that is, what experiences its self-nature is knowledge.
