Because it would lead to the fault of being without conceptualization. The reason for the root negation is established, namely, how could the experiencer of the form-grasping in the continuum of self-grasping be without conceptualization? It is not without conceptualization, because it is a conceptualization that thinks, "This is form, this is the grasping of form." If that form-grasping is experienced by itself, then, that itself, as the subject, when it is conceptualizing form, it will not experience itself as "I am grasping form," because in the continuum of a person, it is not seen that the conceptualization "This is form" and the conceptualization "This is grasping form" arise simultaneously in the continuum of a person. By the same reasoning, that itself, as the subject, will also not be experienced as "This is grasping form" by another consciousness that is simultaneous with it, for the same reason as before. If it is said that it is experienced by a conceptualization that arises later than it, then, the conceptualization that experiences the form-grasping, as the subject, will become a recollection of that form-grasping, because it is a conceptualization that engages in experiencing the form-grasping that has passed in its own time. If it is admitted, then, what is that recollection? It will not be a recollection, because the form-grasping is a mind without an experiencer. Furthermore, the mind of Lhasbyin that has Lhasbyin as its object of its own mind, and the mind of Lhasbyin that has Lhasbyin as the object of another's offering, these two, as the subject, will become the same in nature in the way of completely determining the object, and there will be no difference of whether or not they manifestly experience it, because they are the same in determining the hidden object. Furthermore, according to those who assert that direct perception is conceptual, and those who assert that even if it is non-conceptual, there is no self-awareness, the past object of knowledge, as the subject, how is it established as valid cognition? It is not established as valid cognition, because there is neither that which measures it as direct perception, nor that which measures it as an inferential cognition with a sign. The former part of the reason is established, because direct perception is that which has a present object. The latter part of the reason is established, if you take it as the dharma to be proven, then it is separated from the concordant examples of the subject; and if you take it as the subject, then the subject is not established, therefore the sign does not have the property of being present in the subject. If it is said that the former part of the root reason is not established, namely, the immediately preceding mind that has the nature or appearance of the past object of knowledge

If the opponent says that, since the Sautrāntikas believe that sense consciousnesses appear with the aspect of things that have just ceased, thereby grasping things that have ceased, then (what you said about "not grasping things that have ceased" is not established). Then, for a consciousness that arises immediately after a thing has ceased, the subject, it should not become a consciousness that grasps the previous thing-kind, because between these consciousnesses and itself, there exists the thing-kind that has ceased as an interval. Therefore, since there are the grasped, the grasper, and the experiencer, it is unreasonable to consider it to be conceptual. Just as one's own object-possessing consciousness is an experiencer and is non-conceptual, other valid cognitions, too, the subject, should become non-conceptual, because they grasp objects that cannot be directly expressed. Furthermore, a person, the subject, through what kind of knowledge can one clearly realize the self-character, it should become impossible to realize, because there is no non-conceptual knowledge. If it is said that it is realized through conceptualization, then conceptualization, too, the subject, should not realize the self-character, because it is the same in meaning as the expressing sound that has the nature of expressing universals. If it is said that there are some non-conceptual valid cognitions, therefore they can realize the self-character, then all valid cognitions, the subject, should become non-conceptual like those non-conceptual valid cognitions, because they arise from things that are the same as that valid cognition in terms of cause, condition, and auxiliary condition. This is pervasive, because the sameness, difference, and distinctness of the result arise from the sameness, difference, and distinctness of the nature of the cause. Furthermore, through this reasoning, it can also be established that the sense consciousness that has a relationship of arising from itself is non-conceptual. Naming conceptualization, the subject, its arising does not depend on external objects, because it arises only from the memory of the name of the object. Similarly, eye consciousness, the subject, is not naming conceptualization, because it does not depend on the memory of the name of the object, but arises from the power of the object itself. If the opponent says that the reason is not established, because form depends on the help of the memory of its own name in order to be able to help the sense consciousness that grasps itself, and it does not generate the eye consciousness that grasps itself without depending on it. Then, form, the subject, should directly help the memory of its own name, and not directly help the eye consciousness that grasps itself, because it generates the memory of the name from the direction in which it appears, and from the memory of the name it generates the grasping of itself.
