Are the two objects, the direct perception and the subsequent visual consciousness, the same or different? If they are different, then the discriminating consciousness is the subject, and it follows that it is inverted because it is not a valid cognition, because it apprehends the other object as the present fire, which is the previous fire. If they are the same, it follows that it is not a valid cognition, because it is merely clinging to the meaning established by the previous direct perception. That proponent, the previous direct perception and the object of the other subsequent consciousness, are the subject. If either of you is established by valid cognition, then it follows that both are established, because they are one. Then, according to you, why do you accept such a consciousness? Such a consciousness is the subject, and it is known by the wise who understand reasoning to be a memory, because it is the clinging that connects the subsequent fire with the previous fire, saying, "This is it." If you say that it is a memory because it relies on a sign, then it relies on a sign with three aspects or a reason. If it is the first, then the sign that is its basis is the subject, and it follows that it is not a sign with three aspects, because it is confused about what is to be established. If it is the second, then it is not certain that some memories rely on signs. Thus, having eliminated the wrong conceptions about number and scope from the four wrong conceptions, now, in order to eliminate the wrong conceptions about characteristics, it is said that the teacher Dignāga, the subject, has a reason for not elaborating on the reason for being free from conceptualization when explaining the characteristics of direct perception, because direct perception is free from conceptualization, which is the reason why it can be established by one's own direct perception. Therefore, in the Compendium of Topics, it says: "Direct perception is free from conceptualization by combining names and kinds, etc." He only said that much. The sign is established, because the conceptualizations of all beings are to be done by their own wisdom. What is conceptualization like? Relying on a name is also something that appears as a mixture of sound and meaning that is the basis of the name. Its proof is that from all objects, when the mind that scatters outward is gathered inward and abides without being moved by the wind of realizing the inner self, the mind that sees forms with the eyes is the subject, and it is sense consciousness because it is free from conceptualization, and if there is conceptualization, it becomes subsequent consciousness.

Moreover, I pondered slightly, what and how will my conceptualization become? My conceptualization became like this, because from the perspective of reason, the previously mentioned state of the mind scattering outwards and gathering inwards, its sense organs' conceptualization of the object itself, because the subsequent wisdom cannot recognize conceptualization. Therefore, although the teacher, considering it easy to understand, did not explain in detail, it is not that there are no other reasons for direct perception free from conceptualization, just like this: the particular patterned cow seen simultaneously at the time of convention, its own characteristic is the subject, it is not the real object of the expressive sound, because in other times of designation, the behavior of following it will not be seen. If someone says that the universal thing is the object of sound, so it is already established, is there a need to argue? Then, the appearance of the cow is the subject, it is not showing other universal things different from itself and the entity as the object of sound, because other universal things different from itself and the entity, there is no possibility of appearing in the mind. Therefore, the universal thing does not exist, the self-characteristic of appearance is not the real object of sound, and the sense consciousness does not grasp the meaning of the name and mixture, but grasps the meaning of non-mixture, therefore, all the consciousnesses arising from the sense organs are objects with special self-characteristics. The reason is that special self-characteristic phenomena, you are not objects that the expressive sound can truly enter, because in the time of convention and designation, the special self-characteristic does not follow, therefore you do not have the true entry of convention. Therefore, sense consciousness is the subject, it is not a conceptualization that grasps its own object mixed with sound, because its own object does not truly mix with the expressive sound. This is pervasive, because what is the object of sounds, those expressive sounds themselves are truly mixed, and not for other reasons. The appearing object of the conceptualization produced by the conventional connection is not the object of the sense consciousness, because it appears as name and meaning. This is pervasive, because the conceptualization that connects the meaning with this name, whatever appears as name and meaning, those are the appearing objects of the conceptualization produced by the conventional connection. Therefore, the knowable is the subject, the appearance of the consciousness with the object is different, because the meaning objects
