In order to understand the statement that there is no pot, if the valid cognition (pramāṇa) of the object of the visible pot itself, that is, not observing the visible pot with valid cognition, is stated as a reason, then this is the subject of the thesis (dharmin). The debater is someone who is extremely ignorant of the meaning of words, because the non-observation of the visible is for the sake of understanding the statement that the thing does not exist. This is pervasion (vyāpti): the meaning of non-existence for the non-observation of the visible is well-known and established to all people between foolish cowherds. To summarize these meanings, the knowable is the subject of the thesis. The non-observation of the visible is merely these three: the non-observation of the cause, the non-observation of the pervasive, and the non-observation of the nature. If these three are stated as reasons, then this is the subject of the thesis, because it is a reason that is the result of the debater's certainty of the meaning of words. The certain result of the statement of non-existence or non-existence is also that when the cause or pervasive nature, which is considered visible, etc., is non-existent, that is, not observed, then the results, pervasive nature, etc., are also expressions of non-existence, but not otherwise. Thus, the meanings that came along the way have been explained. Now, the previous statement "in order to apply to the general characteristic of color," etc., is applied to the general case. For inferring color, etc., as impermanent, etc., this is the subject of the thesis. We think that this is the way to apply the general characteristic of impermanence to the general characteristic of color, but not in any other way. If the mind that understands color to be impermanent is considered not to be inference, but to be the recollection that arises after the perception that does not understand the cessation of the continuum of color, thinking "color is impermanent," then it is not reasonable to consider this to be the third valid cognition, because it holds the object that the previous valid cognition has already grasped and completely determined. The reason is established, because the impermanence of color is also established by sense perception before recollection, because there is nothing other than the object of color, and because in the same way that it is easy to establish, the nature is the same. If color and its impermanence are different entities, because the words expressing the subject and predicate express different entities, then the words expressing the subject and predicate are the subject of the thesis. The objects of many different entities of subject and predicate are not the real objects you express, because one object itself is the dharma.

And it arises from cognizing the subject and predicate as different, because the imputed dharmas are the objects of their own real expression. For example, with the subject being the direct perception cognizing color, the general characteristic of color, namely the impermanent substance, is established, because the basis of its general characteristic of impermanence—color—is established through the means of establishment. If that is the case, then inference is meaningless, is it? With the continuous existence of color as the subject, inference must be applied in order to thoroughly establish its impermanence, because direct perception does not establish it as such, and it must be established as such through reasoning. The reason for this is that you sometimes do not fully understand impermanence, because you do not see the difference between the prior and subsequent moments, but rather confuse and cling to them as one. The reason why you grasp the prior and subsequent moments as one and mistake them for permanence is that similar subsequent occurrences continuously arise. This is like the two eggs seen by a person with impaired vision, which, although different, are not definitely distinguished as different due to speed and other factors. The reason for mistaking permanence due to the appearance of similar others is also like this: without relying on signs, even ordinary people can directly see the last moment of a lamp and the destruction of lightning, etc., and thus definitely determine their cessation, but this is not the case for the appearance of mountains and other phenomena where similar others continuously arise. If even seeing does not lead to certainty, how is it? Taking the capacity of a seed to produce a sprout as the subject, this is the direct perception of seeing that grasps the seed, because it has become the self-nature of the seed's entity. Even so, the entity of the seed may become obscured to you, such that you are deluded into thinking it lacks the capacity to produce a sprout, because some cognizers do not clearly see your capacity to produce a sprout, since there is no certainty that the sprout will immediately arise from you, and therefore the appearance of your fruit—the sprout—is not directly seen. In order to reverse the delusion that the seed is incapable, inference is used to infer that it is capable.
