Anger is a dharma. It only lasts as long as there is intense suffering in life, but it does not last forever, because it has intense suffering in life as its cause. So, what is detachment? The Arhats are dharma. They are said to be detached because they have abandoned clinging to all the necessities of existence, thinking, "This is mine, this is all mine," and thus have abandoned the attitude of grasping for what is to be taken and abandoning what is to be discarded out of disappointment, and have equanimity. Some people smear their limbs with sandalwood because their minds are pure, and some people cut off the limbs of others with an axe because of anger, but they remain equal without attachment or anger. If the sutras do not say to meditate on the aspects of suffering, why does meditating on suffering not become a cause of detachment? The suffering that is said to be meditated upon is not the cause of suffering, because it refers to the suffering of contaminated conditioned phenomena. The suffering that we meditate on is also a dharma, and it is suffering in relation to the vision of the noble ones, because it is contaminated, born from the causes of karma and afflictions. Meditating on contaminated suffering is not a direct means of liberation from samsara, but it is a support, a method, for generating the wisdom that realizes selflessness directly. Directly seeing the emptiness of the aggregates is a dharma, and it is a direct means of liberation from samsara, because it is a powerful antidote to the cause of samsara. Meditating on the remaining things, such as meditating on conditioned phenomena, impermanence, contamination, suffering, etc., although not a direct means of liberation from samsara, is meaningful because it is the purpose or reason for generating the wisdom that directly realizes selflessness. Because liberation is attained through the view of emptiness, and meditating on the rest is only its method, the sutras say that from realizing that conditioned phenomena are impermanent, one then realizes that contaminated phenomena are suffering, and from that one realizes that the aggregates are selfless. As it is said in the sutra: "Monks, is form permanent or impermanent? Venerable ones, it is impermanent. Whatever is impermanent, is it happiness or suffering? Venerable ones, it is suffering. Whatever is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change

So, is it okay to say, "This is mine, oh, this is my all"? "That monk is not a mother," and so on. Because meditating on suffering does not actually liberate from samsara, therefore, for you. Such a person with self-grasping who desires to be free from attachment, the characteristic is, is called a samsaric being, because they are not liberated from afflictions and the virtuous and non-virtuous actions instigated by them. Because they rely on all the activities of accepting and rejecting pleasure and pain, because they possess the craving to obtain happiness and the desire to abandon suffering. The reason for this is also because they are not free from attachment to self. Therefore, if there is self-grasping, then attachment to what is mine will not lead to liberation, it necessarily follows. Even if there is liberation, if it is not admitted that the liberated one possesses what is mine, then therefore, the liberated self, the characteristic is, it necessarily follows that there is no enjoyer of what is mine. If it is admitted, then, that characteristic is, it necessarily follows that there is no self of the nature of liberation either. Because what is mine does not have an enjoyer. It is universally established, because the self has the characteristic of acting from the cause and enjoying the fruit. After concluding the teaching on the path of seeing selflessness, it is said that those realized beings who desire to be liberated from the bonds of samsara, the characteristic is, must make great efforts to familiarize themselves with the view of selflessness, thereby eradicating from the root the view of the aggregates with the characteristics of self and what is mine, because the view of the aggregates is the root of samsara, and the path to the city of nirvana is only the view of selflessness. What is the view of the aggregates like? It arises from seeds of its own kind that possess a beginningless continuum. Furthermore, some people think that even if the view of selflessness is not the path, but even if it does not harm the self, a person can be liberated merely by the power of Ishvara, just as seeds that have been previously created do not produce sprouts. Then, those realized beings who seek liberation, the characteristic is, the statement that liberation can be achieved merely by the power of Ishvara is not a completely satisfying valid cognition, it necessarily follows. Because there is no reason to see that such a proclaimed scripture possesses the reality of truth that corresponds to its expressed content.
