Explanation of Chapter Two of the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel of Reasoning Explanation of Chapter Two of the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel of Reasoning Thus, the teacher first explained the reason for teaching the treatise, which is the subsequent inference for one's own benefit. Now, in the Compendium of Topics, "Having become a valid one, wishing to benefit beings, the teacher, the Sugata, the protector, I prostrate," in order to explain this praise, he said "valid" and so on. To this, prostration is correct. To whom? To the Bhagavan, the Sage of the Shakyas, who is born as the valid direct perception that has become the nature of non-conceptual wisdom from the power of the meditator. From what cause does he arise? From the perfection of intention, the great compassion that wishes to benefit beings, and the perfection of action, the qualities of habituation in seeing the means of selflessness, and so on. In what kind of nature does he arise? In the nature of the Sugata, who is perfect in his own benefit and has special qualities of abandonment and realization, and in the nature of the protector, who is perfect in benefiting others and liberating beings from suffering. So, with what qualities is the Bhagavan praised as a valid one, and what is the definition of a valid cognition? The basis of sense direct perception is a valid cognition. For measuring one's own object of engagement, it is a consciousness that is initially non-deceptive. So, what is non-deceptive like? That is the subject, for measuring one's own object of engagement, it is initially non-deceptive, because for its own object of engagement, it can accomplish things as it measures them, and it exists in things. If sound does not become a valid cognition, because non-deception is not established, then is the arising of sound not a valid cognition for one's own intention? Is it not a valid cognition for the meaning it expresses? If according to the first statement, then the intelligence arising from the sound that understands that another person has thoughts in their mind from the sign of speech is also a subject, and it is non-deceptive for its own object of engagement, because for its own object of engagement, it clearly and non-erroneously shows that the person who wants to express it has thoughts in their mind. That is the establishment of the thesis itself, the expressive sound of a pot, etc., which is devoid of five situations, is the subject, for its own speaker, it makes the meaning of the object of engagement that one wants to express clearly appear in the mind, establishing this, it becomes a valid cognition, that is, it becomes the sign of proof, that is, the three ways of establishing it.

For this reason. Secondly, again, that very thing, is not born from its expressed meaning, such as a vase, etc., and is not mistaken about it, because it is not the cause of meanings such as vases, etc., because it enters only by the intention of expression. If it is thought that the conventional knowledge that grasps things and numbers, etc., becomes valid because it does not deceive its object of engagement, then, such conventional knowledge, that very thing, is not considered a valid cognition that does not deceive its object of engagement at first, because it is merely holding on to the clinging to the meaning that its previous valid cognition has grasped. If one asks, why is it that only non-deceptive knowledge is valid, and sense faculties, etc., are not valid? The two results of valid cognition, determination and non-determination, can only be accomplished by knowledge that is initially non-deceptive, but not by sense faculties, etc. Like this, the mind that is initially non-deceptive, that very thing, you will become a valid cognition that is able to accomplish the result of the determination of valid cognition, because you are the main cause of engaging in and disengaging from things to be accepted and rejected by a person, because you show the things to be accepted and rejected by a person without error; and you will also become a valid cognition that is able to accomplish the result of the non-determination of valid cognition, that is, understanding the meaning, because if the appearance of the meaning that appears to you is different, then the result of the determination of valid cognition, that is, the different understanding of meaning, will also exist, because due to the different appearances of objects such as blue, yellow, etc., the understanding of the meaning of the mind that understands them is also considered different. If one asks, by what is it determined that only the initially non-deceptive knowledge is valid? If it is not that, then by what is it determined to be valid? The non-mistaken sense consciousness that grasps a distant, burning red object that is actually fire, but hesitates because of doubt as to whether it is fire, that very thing, from its own experienced self-awareness, will understand the part that experiences its own nature, because it appears very clearly to it. From that, it will not understand that it is a valid cognition that does not deceive its object of engagement, because it understands that it is a valid cognition that does not deceive its object of engagement from the appearance of functioning, etc., that arises after itself, and the name of the object of engagement being the same. If that is the case, then the definition of valid cognition is completely
