Therefore, it cannot be eradicated from the root, because it is not contrary to afflictive ignorance. It is pervasive, because all faults and so on are rooted in that afflictive ignorance, and that is because it is the view of the perishable aggregate that grasps the aggregates as self. Some Sautrāntikas say: Ignorance is the nature of unclear conceptualization characterized by being deluded about the self, while the view of the perishable aggregate is afflictive wisdom, so the two are different mental factors, not the same. In response, afflictive ignorance, the view of the perishable aggregate characterized by the view of self and what belongs to self, should not be a different thing from it, because the wisdom that directly realizes selflessness is its contradictory, its direct antidote. The reason is established, because the sūtras say that from the perspective of the wisdom (prajñā) that realizes selflessness, misapprehending in a reversed way is ignorance. As it says in the *Moon Lamp Sūtra*: "What is it that is without unknowing? It is not superimposing on things as they are in reality." Furthermore, it is also established by reasoning that ignorance is the contradictory of the wisdom (prajñā) that realizes selflessness. So, is the other of ignorance the contradictory, or is non-existence the contradictory, or is contradiction the contradictory? First, merely being different from wisdom is not ignorance, because if that were the case, form and so on would also be ignorance. Second, merely the absence of wisdom is not ignorance either, because it is itself a mental factor, so it has an object and an aspect. For example, like a forest with leaves, a body with hands. Furthermore, the *Ten Bhūmi Sūtra* also says that the view of the perishable aggregate is ignorance, as the sūtra says: "Whatever doubts arise in the world, all of them arise from grasping at self." If that is the case, then what corresponds to the view is ignorance, so this contradicts saying that the two correspond. In response, when explaining afflictive ignorance, whatever appears to contradict some parts of the scriptures should be explained in various ways as not contradicting. Therefore, that kind of scripture,

Because it is something else, it is not said that these two are equally possessed. It is only because wrong view is on one side and ignorance is on one side that it is merely shown that these two are equally possessed. Therefore, one who directly sees the emptiness of the aggregates with self, has the nature of self-view, clinging to the eater and the doer, etc., and all the faults such as attachment arising from it, are completely contradictory in meaning, because self-view is directly contradictory to its object and aspect. For this reason, only seeing no-self is the antidote to faults. If attachment, etc., are not completely cut off for sentient beings, it is because they are the dharma of sentient beings. For example, like earth, etc., to form, etc. Attachment, etc., are the dharma of sentient beings with the nature of self, therefore it is not that they are not completely extinguished for them, because it is not established as their dharma. Also, this dharma is not something that cannot be returned to sentient beings, because on the continuum connected with the wisdom of directly realizing no-self on the side of the antidote, you also see those who return. If the faults destroyed by the antidote arise again when separated from the antidote, just as the hardness of gold, etc., arises again when separated from fire. The mind-stream that has completely ceased the faults by the antidote, that is, the place of eradication has been transformed to the ultimate, is not like the hardness of gold, etc., and faults will not arise again when separated from the antidote, because it has become the nature or essence of that antidote, so there is no separation from it. Furthermore, it is not certain that faults will return merely because the antidote has deteriorated, just as ashes do not return to wood even if the fire deteriorates. Thus, after showing that only realizing no-self is the path to liberation, those who say that self should be known, thought about, and meditated upon, such as the logicians, etc., refute those who say that self-view is the path to liberation, for any person who sees the aggregates as self, will always develop attachment and clinging to self, because they have the direct cause of self-view. Or, they will crave for their own happiness, because they are attached to self. What will happen from that? They will become the accomplisher of their own happiness.
