Because the habit that arises again is a quality of mind that does not depend on repeated effort. This (habit), if the basis is stable and there is no interference, will arise naturally, because it is due to the power of extreme familiarity in the mindstream, and it is the quality of being able to generate a more excellent later one from the earlier one of the same kind. For example, if fire is unimpeded, until it turns to ashes, wood and earth, etc., will produce other different effects, and like taming mercury without it scattering by using medicines for taming mercury, and like gradually removing the impurities of gold, copper, etc., by using fluxes for refining gold, copper, etc. Summarizing its meaning: Therefore, this (habit), the effort of familiarity can make the earlier one of the same kind more excellent than the earlier one, and the later one more excellent than the later one, because the basis is stable and familiarity is completed, and arising again does not depend on repeated effort; and, the earlier one of the same kind arises from familiarity and arises naturally, it is the quality born of the nature of mind, therefore. Applying these to the topic to be proven, love and wisdom, etc., these minds, if there are no opposing conditions and they are not separated from the supporting condition of familiarity, then where will their measure abide, that is, they will increase infinitely, because it is the quality of being able to increase from the seed of the earlier one of the same kind. Therefore, this act of jumping, the earlier jump itself of love, etc., in this way, the later jump does not arise naturally, but is of a definite measure, because naturally, the power of cause and effect and effort have the definite ability to produce a result of definite measure. If this act of jumping does not arise from the same kind, but increases from the strength of the body, then why does the ordinary person who trains not jump like the later jump even at first? This (ordinary person who trains), does not jump like the later jump even at first, because the body is imbalanced and weighed down by phlegm, etc. And, when the imbalance of heaviness and earth, water, etc., are gradually removed through efforts such as body movement, the act of jumping does not increase infinitely.

Therefore, because it exists only to the extent of the physical strength and effort it takes. If, like jumping, love and so on are without obstacles, but not spontaneously arising, then, the habit of love and so on arising from the seed of its own kind in the past, is such that if there is no harm from the opposite side, such as hatred, which has the seed of its own kind in the past as its cause, and if it is not separated from the favorable condition of habituation, then it will become the nature of spontaneously entering the mind. The reason is that your mind's dharmas, such as love, detachment, wisdom, compassion, joy, equanimity, and so on, the former habits are the root, that is, the cause, of the latter's distinct and increasing characteristics. Therefore, the Thubpa Bhagavan is the nature of spontaneously arising love and great compassion, because it arises from repeatedly habituating great compassion in many lifetimes. For example, for an Arhat who is free from desire in the three realms, there is the wisdom of detachment; for a person who is very habituated to desire, there is the wisdom of desire; for a yogi who is habituated to impurity, there is the wisdom of aversion spontaneously arising. Wanting to expound the complete application path, for the time being, wanting to liberate others from suffering, it is reasonable to first strive for the means of pacifying one's own suffering, as such the expounder, the loving application path practitioner who wants to liberate all sentient beings from suffering, in order to first destroy his own suffering, it is reasonable to manifestly apply the means that are in accordance with the pacification of suffering, because he wants to truly expound the means of pacifying suffering to others. It is universally present, if the liberation arising from the means of pacifying suffering and the path of liberation, the cause of that liberation, are hidden and cannot be known manifestly, then it is difficult to truly expound it to others. So, what is the manner of applying the means? It follows the scriptures and reasoning, and with the wisdom of discernment, it examines whether suffering has a cause or is without a cause? Is the cause permanent or impermanent?
