That which is merely the opposite, without distinguishing that difference, is the subject. You will thoroughly understand that sound is impermanent, because it is the three ways of establishing sound as impermanent. Therefore, now to show the actual answer: because it is so, therefore, that which is merely the opposite without distinguishing the difference in the opposite, is the subject. Other words such as "impermanent" cannot be actually understood other than the word "made," because the word "made," which is the dharma of the name, can be understood non-commonly. Therefore, made, as the subject, exists distinctly from impermanence in terms of exclusion, because the word "made" can actually make you understand, but cannot actually understand impermanence. The word "impermanence" can actually understand impermanence, but cannot actually understand you, therefore, because of that reason. For that, because "all things" etc. include all signs and inferences by exclusion, and it has been shown that made and impermanent are also different in terms of exclusion in the opposite, so it is reasonable as a sign and a sign-possessor. Someone says: signs and inferences do not include self-character, so why do they include by exclusion? The answer is: after prohibiting signs and inferences from including self-character, they include by exclusion. Then, if signs and inferences include self-character, do they include in order to make the uncomprehended comprehended? Or do they include in order to make the uncertain certain? If it is like the first case, the self-nature of things, the self-character of sound, one, as the subject, for the other part of oneself that is not seen by self-cognizing direct perception, what is to be examined by the measure of signs and inferences, that is, what is to be measured, does not exist, because one's own non-common self-nature is clearly manifested in self-cognizing direct perception. Then, doesn't that fault also apply to you? The answer is: just as from seeing the similarities of the dharma of form, white etc., one imputes the appearance of silver to a seashell. If, due to the reasons of internal and external delusion, one attaches other qualities such as unmade, permanent, etc. to sound, that is, if one does not impute, then the inclusion of signs and inferences that establish sound as made, impermanent, etc. will become a meaningless fault, but it is not so, because the word "that" dharma.

If it is thought that applying reasons and inferences to you to establish impermanence etc. is not meaningless, it is because, due to internal and external errors, you are not imposed upon as unmade, permanent, etc. In order to eliminate these, it is necessary to apply reasons and inferences to you to establish impermanence etc. The summary of the meaning of those two verses is: For what reason is it not so? Even though by seeing the entity of sound, one can see all the qualities of sound such as being made and impermanent, due to internal and external errors, it is not determined as seen, and there is imposition. In order to eliminate these, reasons and inferences are applied to sound to establish being made, impermanence, etc. The combination is as before. This is the summarizing verse. If, as in the second case, it is admitted that through reasons and inferences, one grasps and ascertains from the perspective of establishing the own-character of things, then, sound as the subject, applying other reasons and inferences to you to establish being made and selflessness etc. becomes meaningless. Because once one of your qualities such as impermanence is ascertained, one can grasp and ascertain from the perspective of establishing all your qualities. Then, wouldn't that fault also apply to you? If asked thus, the inference of sound being impermanent etc. as the subject, you have grasped all the qualities of sound, therefore the fault of applying reasons and inferences to sound to establish being made, impermanence etc. becoming meaningless, does not extend here. Because you are merely eliminating the imposition of grasping sound as permanent by ascertaining the mere severance of permanence on sound. Summarizing its meaning, the answer relevant to the present situation is: Knowable as the subject, it should be proclaimed and stated that, as mentioned before, all reasons and inferences are object-oriented towards eliminating others. Because applying reasons and inferences to establish own-character is faulty, while applying through elimination is faultless. Showing those meanings from the opposite perspective is: If sound is applied through eliminating permanence, rather than applying to own-character, then, knowable as the subject, applying reasons and inferences becomes meaningless. Because once the subject is established through direct perception, there is no need to measure with reasons and inferences that are not established through direct perception.
