O Lord of the Earth. It is not the case that the intentions of the debaters become clear explications of each single meaning, because they are such that they can be applied to many meanings. Therefore, by blocking the ascertainment of the meaning of the Vedas, that also blocks other ways of establishing the Vedas as having true meaning. Furthermore, that kind of Vedic sound, as the subject, is true in meaning, like fire averting cold, because it is one part of the Vedas. For example, the twelve months that avert cold are a year. Other debaters say that the speech of the Vedas is like the truth. This reason, which establishes other aspects of the Vedas as having true meaning by the sign of being one part of the Vedas, as the subject, is blocked by you, the protector of knowledge, because it is itself a superfluous and mistaken sign. Universally, just as by the sign of 'because the eaten fruit and the essence, i.e., the form, are the same,' one establishes that the uneaten fruit and the eaten fruit have the same taste; and just as by the sign of 'the ripe fruit and being contained in the same vessel,' one establishes that all the fruits are ripe. All such universally mistaken signs are blocked by the protector, because they are correct signs. Therefore, I will not elaborate here. Thus, having extensively refuted the argument that the Vedas are a valid means of cognition, by showing many contradictions, it is shown that it is not reasonable to accept that the Vedas have true meaning. The Vedas, as the subject, are not true in meaning, because they show many contradictions. For example, the person or self is permanent, single, the agent of cause and the enjoyer of the result of maturation; and things are permanent, and the nature beyond the senses, etc., is apprehended by the senses; and the causes of things are not the same, the permanent also depends on conditions to produce results; and the abiding is not the same, the established abides by conditions; and the destruction is not the same, the cause of destruction is destroyed by other things; furthermore, what is completely eliminated by the two valid means of perception and inference, i.e., the object or expression of harm; and the root of non-virtue such as attachment; and the elimination of sins by bathing, etc., through the contradiction of promises, relying on scripture and contradicting inference. These and so on.

The act of accepting the Vedas as true is like a prostitute defeating her master with lies. If one accepts without doing anything, it is because one has not eliminated with reason the meanings that contradict the three valid cognitions, and has not shown through the necessity and connection of entering the treatises of the realized ones, but has accepted merely through faith. If one aspect of the Vedas is true, does that alone prove that all the Vedas are valid? Then, knowable phenomena, what is not a valid cognition in the words of worldly people? Because it is not the case that there is not a single true meaning in the words of many people. They extensively negate the relationship between sound and meaning, and conclude that: this sound called "pot," etc., is not the nature or result of the object it expresses, because it exists only in the intention of the speaker. If one accepts, then there is no confusion with what it expresses, that is, there is no relationship of non-confusion. Because it is completely opposite to the relationship of identity and causality with what it expresses, that is, neither exists. If the way of expressing sounds is like this: by seeing the object to be expressed, attachment to it arises, from that arises the intention to express, from that arises the sound of expression, therefore there is no relationship with the object to be expressed, then, phenomena such as sound, how can you express mutually contradictory meanings such as permanent and impermanent? Because you have not been proven to be both permanent and impermanent. Because there is no relationship between sound and meaning, therefore the person who wants to understand the meaning of the scripture from the scripture cannot ascertain the meaning of the scripture by the valid cognition that enters through the power of things. Because if there is no relationship between the scripture and the objects of meaning, then the connection of non-occurrence will not be established. Therefore, even if the scripture wrongly shows kalpas, etc., it cannot be proven merely by that that the objects of kalpas, etc., do not exist. Because there is no relationship with kalpas, etc. Therefore, because it is not observed, how

That which refutes the meaning of non-existence, knowable phenomena, such as the end of an aeon, etc., cannot be established as the result of certainty of non-existence because it is not perceived by valid cognition. Even if there is an end of an aeon, etc., it cannot be established by direct perception or inference, because it is not related to the scriptures. Thus, if someone admits a contradiction that is only a verbal expression and has no connection, and is not established by valid cognition, then it shows that he is a fool. Debaters, etc., you are a fool, because you are a person who possesses the five characteristics of perverse wisdom. That is: claiming that all Vedas are valid cognition; claiming that permanent phenomena such as the self can generate scriptures, etc.; believing that bathing can purify sins, etc., as white dharma; being proud and arrogant in claiming to be a Brahmin even without the qualities of morality, etc., and claiming to be knowledgeable; and saying that in order to destroy sins, one must diligently perform various ascetic practices. The outline of the extensive commentary "Pramāṇavārttika" (Commentary on Valid Cognition), that is, the complete and well-explained meaning of the words of the first chapter on inference for oneself (only). Explanation of the first chapter from "Tshad ma rigs pa'i 'dod 'jo" (The Wish-Fulfilling Cow of Reasoning).
