If it is not established, which of the two, existent or nonexistent, should be posited as the subject? Firstly, the existent is that which can perform a function, the subject. It follows that there is no homogeneity in establishing the appearance of the main consciousness as its own characteristic, because such an appearance is not established as you. Secondly, both are knowable, measurable, etc., the subject. It follows that the characteristic of establishing it is mistaken, because it is a dharma that depends on both existent and nonexistent things. Thirdly, the nonexistent dharma is the emptiness that can perform a function, the subject. It follows that the reason for establishing it is contradictory, because it does not exist in all homogeneous instances of establishing it, and it exists in all heterogeneous instances. The previous establishment of the principle, "If it does not exist, it will become the nature of existence," is that the "made" which is established as the nature of the dharma to be established is the means of understanding or the reason. For that reason, from the moment of its establishment, the impermanence that pervades it must be determined as the nature of the means of understanding or the dharma to be established. Therefore, this impermanence is the subject. When you are negated, the made is also negated, because the made is the pervaded of your same nature, and you are the pervader of the nature of the made. Incidentally, showing the two combinations of the nature sign: For example, whatever is made is impermanent, like a pot. Sound is also made, like this, combining the subject and the homogeneous example with the dharma to be established and the reason in the same way, is the statement of proof of homogeneous combination; or, whatever is not destroyed is not made, like uncompounded space. Sound is made, like this, combining the subject and the heterogeneous example with the dharma to be established and the reason in a dissimilar way, is like the two statements of proof of heterogeneous combination. The previous establishment of the principle, "It is only related to existence," is that phenomena are the subject. They are connected with destruction as soon as their own entity is established, because as soon as they are established, they are destroyed independently of other causes. If it is not established, the destruction of phenomena depends on other causes, phenomena are the subject. They are not necessarily changed, because they are not necessarily destroyed, because they depend on other causes. For example, a white cloth becomes colored, because it depends on other causes, so it is not necessarily colored as soon as it is established.

Thus it should be known. If it is said that things have many causes of destruction such as hammers, so they must be destroyed. This is the subject. Although you have many causes of destruction such as hammers, it is impossible for some of you to be destroyed, because the causes of destruction such as hammers do not exist on some of you. This reason has been explained. What is explained? For those opponents who say that things have causes of destruction, all the causes of destruction they consider, such as hammers, become errors in the pervading relation of proving the causes of destruction of their own effects, such as vases. Because the destruction of their own effects, such as vases, exists, but it is not necessarily produced. This reason also explains that the destruction of things does not depend on other causes, and the hammers, etc., which are considered the causes of destruction of vases, etc., are the subject. Because hammers, etc., have no ability to help the destruction of vases, etc., because the destruction of vases, etc., is not real. Therefore, this destruction is the subject. Once things are established, they are naturally connected with it, because this is the law of the nature of things. Knowable is the subject. Just as impermanent things such as lightning are connected with destruction once they are established, similarly, for those mountains, etc., that are considered permanent, destruction is also naturally connected with them once they are established, because lightning, etc., and mountains, etc., are the same in that their destruction does not depend on other causes. Summarizing the meaning of the two establishing signs: Not only the sign of the effect, but also the sign of the nature must not be mistaken on the proven dharma, therefore, any inference that takes things as its object, that is, the correct establishing sign, is the subject. There are two kinds, namely, the sign of the effect and the nature that are related to the dharma to be proven and are not mistaken in determining the effect and the nature. The establishing signs have been explained above, and next the negating signs are explained. First, explain "the previous valid cognition does not establish": Earth, this is the subject. The meaning of the end of the eon not being seen by valid cognition is, on the basis of the establishment in one's own side, to prove that the knowledge, speech, and conceptual meaning that necessarily exist at the end of the eon do not establish the valid cognition, that is, as a sign.
