Merely stating a single entity does not cause a pot to attain its own characteristic. If the general characteristic of a pot were truly existent, it should be able to appear in the mind. However, it does not appear in the mind. This is because if an entity that is able to appear is not observed, then it is necessarily the case that there is no entity that is able to appear. Therefore, you, the teacher Dignāga (and Dharmakīrti), should not show the expressing sounds and the conceptual thoughts that have a general object as their object as having a truly existent general object as their object, but rather as having an object of other-exclusion. If sounds and thoughts operate through exclusion, then it is appropriate to establish a common basis and attain its own characteristic. If stating a truly existent general characteristic, then it is impossible to establish a common basis and attain those own characteristics. If the general characteristic is truly existent, then is the general characteristic a single clear substance or multiple different substances? If it is a single substance, then the entities, i.e., the cow and the appearances of the cow, should not be objects grasped by minds that are different in nature, because their essence is the same. If you assert this, then it follows that they cannot be a common basis. Another problem is that the generality of a cow should both follow and contradict the black, hunched cow, because the genus of the cow is a generality and is the same entity as the white and brindled cow. If you assert this, then it follows that it is not that, because it is a partless unity. This is because a partless unity is not something that abides as an object of following and contradicting. If the general characteristic is multiple different substances, then, for knowables, even the non-different, i.e., the terms of a common basis, such as "blue lotus," will lack a cause for applying, because "blue" expresses a different attribute substance, and "lotus" expresses a different general substance. If someone thinks, is there a fault in speaking of exclusion? For the system of speaking of exclusion, there are none of those faults of not having a general characteristic, a common basis, etc., because from the perspective of exclusion, the other-exclusion that turns away from dissimilar kinds is universally present in all appearances of similar kinds. If the general characteristic is not truly existent, then the appearances should not apply the term of a general characteristic, because there is no reason to apply it. Therefore, it would be too extreme to have to apply a different designation to each appearance. If someone says, for the appearances of cows that are of the same kind but different, such as milking, loading, etc., the result is the same.
