Thinking that at the time of convention, sound will be used to refer to things, therefore, the sounds that can express are applied to the things to be expressed, thus establishing pervasiveness. Since this is the case, the necessity of examining linguistic conventions lies in the fact that the category of cow or the common permanent entity, as the subject of the proposition. It is unreasonable for a knowledgeable person to conventionally establish the sound "cow" as your real name, because you cannot be used for functions such as milking and carrying loads. If it is said that merely the common permanent entity is not the object of convention, but rather through the mode of commonality, the appearances related to that commonality are the objects of convention. Since the appearances related to the commonality are able to function, there is no fault of whether or not they can function. Then, the question is asked, for what reason is that convention not directly applied to the appearances? If it is said that the convention is not directly applied to the appearances because the appearances are infinite (if this is said). The sound "cow", as the subject of the proposition, is not directly applied to the appearances of cows that are different from the commonality of cows, because those appearances are infinite, and these two are the same. Furthermore, milking, carrying loads, etc., are different from the things that perform these functions, merely excluding other things that are different, then the question is asked, what reason is there for not making a convention for them? If it is said that if the opposite other-exclusion is made the object of sound, then making the things related to the commonality the object of sound would have the fault of placement, because the two are the same. Although there would not be that fault, even if there were, it would be easy to resolve. The sound "cow", as the subject of the proposition, when you are used as the expresser, there is no need to make the permanent entities other than the category of cow the object to be expressed, because merely through the other-exclusion that distinguishes the appearances of cows from non-cows, the purpose of you being used as the expresser is accomplished. This is what is to be explained. Then, does the sound "cow" exclude non-cows in expression, or does it not exclude them? If it is said that it does not exclude them, then the sound "cow", as the subject of the proposition, what is the necessity of conventionally establishing it as the real name of a cow? There is no necessity, because if you do not distinguish this cow from those non-cows, then the difference will not be understood. The pervasiveness is, because considering that the cow is completely excluded from other non-cows, thereby making the cow unique, that is why you make a convention and apply it to the cow.

If the expressing sound has the ability to exclude what is not it, then, for you, the opponent who asserts that the general, permanent, and real sound is the object of expression, the subject of the proposition: In the place where the sound "cow" applies as an object of expression, what is the purpose of other general, permanent, and real things? It becomes unnecessary, because the sound "cow" excludes the object of expression that is not a cow, making the cow a non-common object of application. This is pervasive, because isn't the necessity of applying conventional terms for expressing sounds just to exclude the meaning that is not desired to be expressed, and to make those with conceptual thought apply to the desired meaning? Because it is so. If there is no general, permanent entity, then the clear, similar, and different things will not become objects to which the mind that recognizes them as the same kind applies, will they? Although the earlier and later appearances of a cow are different because there is no general, permanent entity, the actions of milking, yoking, etc., are similar. Having seen the previous similar actions, when seeing other similar later actions, the sound discriminations of inner expression, which are separated from the meaning different from the actions of milking, yoking, etc., and which have as their object the exclusion of others from the cow, combine the earlier and later appearances of the cow together as one kind, and thus recognize, "This is it." The earlier and later appearances of a cow, the subject of the proposition: Even though you do not have a general, permanent entity that follows you, you can still be recognized and applied to the same category, because even without it, you are equally able to produce the same kind of results, such as milking and yoking. Thus, having shown that even without a general entity, the arising of general wisdom is reasonable, now, according to the general proponents themselves, showing that general wisdom does not arise from the general, for others besides those who assert general entities, the general wisdom of a cow, the subject of the proposition: It does not arise from taking only the general, permanent entity of a cow itself as the object of apprehension, because it also apprehends the appearances of a cow. If it is not so, then the general wisdom of a cow, the subject of the proposition, will become completely unaware of the appearances of a cow, because it always only distinguishes and apprehends the general, permanent entity of a cow. If you accept, then in that case, the appearances of a cow will definitely not become possessed of the generality of a cow, because at the time
