If, because self-grasping is impermanent and suffering, etc., understanding it as such is non-reversed, and grasping at permanence, etc., is reversed, can it serve as an antidote? If one understands that these aggregates of Hearers and Solitary Realizers are merely impermanent in conventional truth, then one must realize that the aggregates of form, etc., are without inherent existence in ultimate truth. Otherwise, understanding them as impermanent in conventional truth would be contradictory. If one thinks of the aggregates as impermanent things, just as the aggregates do not abide in permanence, etc., in conventional truth, they also do not abide in impermanence, etc., in ultimate truth, then there would be the fault of not being able to serve as an antidote. Then, in the Sutras, it is said: "Bhikkhus, is form permanent or impermanent?" "Venerable one, it is impermanent." "That which is impermanent, is it happiness or suffering?" "Venerable one, it is suffering." "That which is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, is it proper to regard it as 'This is mine, this is I, this is my self'?" "Venerable one, it is not proper." From these words, the five excellent disciples generated noble wisdom. What does this mean? In these and other Sutras that teach the Dharma in terms of arising and ceasing, for those disciples whose minds are not yet mature, they will recognize that form, etc., have the nature of arising and ceasing in ultimate truth, thereby abandoning their reversed clinging to permanence, etc., and merely serving to mature their minds. As it is said in the "Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning": "Arising and ceasing are taught for a necessary purpose. By knowing arising, one knows ceasing. By knowing ceasing, one knows impermanence. By knowing how to engage with impermanence itself, one also realizes the nature of Dharma." This is what is said. For those who have previously cultivated emptiness and whose habitual tendencies are fully mature, even from teaching the Dharma in terms of arising and ceasing, they can realize the meaning of no inherent existence. Because arising and ceasing can only be established on dependent origination and no inherent existence, and cannot be established on things with inherent existence, because changing inherent existence is unreasonable. As it is said in the "Root Verses on the Middle Way": "For whom emptiness is possible, for him everything is possible. For whom emptiness is impossible, for him nothing is possible." And, "Whatever arises from conditions is unborn. For it, arising...

Its own nature does not exist. Whatever depends on conditions is said to be empty. Whoever understands emptiness is mindful. This is what is said. If the Hearers and Solitary Realizers focus on the Hinayana scriptures for listening and contemplation, and even then the absence of inherent existence of phenomena is not taught, how can the Hearers and Solitary Realizers realize the absence of inherent existence of phenomena? It is not so, because the meaning of the absence of inherent existence is also taught in the Hearer's scriptures. How is it taught? In some sutras, it is said that due to the condition of ignorance, actions arise, and so on, and "Is form permanent or impermanent? Venerable one, it is impermanent." and so on, thus directly clarifying the conventional aspects of arising and ceasing, and so on, thereby implicitly teaching the meaning of the absence of inherent existence. As it is said in the Root Verses on the Middle Way: "Whatever Dharma the Bhagavan said, that which is deceptive is false. All conditioned phenomena are deceptive Dharmas, therefore they are false. The Bhagavan said these, in order to fully proclaim emptiness." Some sutras directly teach the meaning of the absence of inherent existence, as it is said: "The Bhagavan, knowing existence and non-existence, in Katyayana's instruction, negated both existence and non-existence." And "In the Great Vehicle, unbornness is taught, the exhaustion of others is emptiness. Knowing exhaustion and non-arising, because they are one, therefore please be patient." These are the scriptural sources from the Hearer's scriptures for the Hearers and Solitary Realizers to realize the absence of inherent existence of phenomena. There is also a source in the Mahayana scriptures, as it is said in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra: "Those who wish to study in the Hearer's ground should also study the Perfection of Wisdom. Those who wish to study in the Solitary Realizer's ground should also study the Perfection of Wisdom." and so on. In the Condensed Sutra, it is also said: "Those who wish to become Hearers of the Sugata, and those who wish to become Solitary Realizers and Dharma Kings, cannot attain it without relying on this patience, just as one cannot see the other shore from this shore." And in the Sutra on the Ten Grounds, it is also said: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, for example, a prince born into a royal family, possessing the name of a king, is
