When this number was spoken, some monks, without accepting (any teachings), obtained liberation of mind from the defilements. Some monks, by hearing the Dharma, obtained the Dharma-eye, which is stainless, free from defilement, and pure, because the meaning of all dharmas being without inherent existence was taught. So, why is it said that realization arises in Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas? There are two types of individuals of the Śrāvaka and Pratyekabuddha lineage: those whose continuum is not mature and those whose continuum is mature. For the former, merely hearing the Dharma spoken by the teacher does not cause realization to arise. First, by upholding the scriptures, reciting, etc., they fully understand the Dharma of the scriptures by hearing it. After that, relying on the four types of reasoning, they properly analyze the meaning of what they have heard, thereby generating wisdom arising from thought. After that, by familiarizing themselves with the meaning of what they have thought about through the method of combining the two, they generate the wisdom arising from meditation that directly manifests the true meaning as it is, and they obtain liberation. Such an individual focuses solely on the Śrāvakayāna's collection of texts for hearing, etc. In this regard, it is said that the object of practice for Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas is the Śrāvakayāna's collection of texts. For those whose continuum is mature, because they have familiarized themselves with hearing, thinking, and meditating in other lifetimes, their continuum is very mature. Therefore, in this life, merely hearing the scriptures that explain the reality of the Dharma to others, they generate realization and obtain liberation. Among them, some are liberated by hearing the scriptures that explain the absence of inherent existence, and some obtain liberation by hearing the scriptures that explain the Four Noble Truths, impermanence, etc. Therefore, when the Blessed One spoke the Sūtras of the Great and Small Vehicles, it is said that many monks obtained realization. If realization arises in Śrāvakas from the scriptures that explain that all dharmas are without inherent existence, then this contradicts the fact that they have not realized the absence of self of phenomena. Why is that? The intention of the Sūtras that explain the absence of inherent existence is twofold: the absence of inherent existence of the self of persons and the absence of inherent existence of the self of phenomena. The first refers to the aggregates such as form, which depend on other causes and conditions, and do not arise from their own nature, and because they are destroyed in an instant, they do not remain in their own nature.

And, like the way children perceive the essence of self and sentient beings, it is not established as such. The second is: the completely imputed exists only as imputation, therefore it lacks the self-nature of its own characteristics; the other-dependent relies on other conditions, therefore it lacks the self-nature of arising; the thoroughly established is the nature of emptiness, therefore it lacks the ultimate self-nature. As stated in the *Abhidharmasamuccaya*: "What is the intention behind the statement in the extensive sutras that all dharmas are without self-nature? It is because they do not arise by themselves, they are not their own, they do not abide in their own nature, and they do not have the characteristics as perceived by the ignorant." Furthermore, it is said: "In the completely imputed nature, there is no characteristic self-nature; in the other-dependent, there is no arising self-nature; in the thoroughly established, there is no ultimate self-nature." Thus it is explained. Among them, those of the Hearer lineage whose minds are ripened, because they have previously only familiarized themselves with the absence of self of persons, when the absence of self-nature of all dharmas is taught, they first realize the absence of self-nature. But because of their weak intellect and lack of familiarity, they do not realize the second one. Therefore, from the teachings on the absence of self-nature, it should be observed that it is not contradictory for Hearers to generate realization. Thus, the brothers Asanga and Vasubandhu, along with their followers of the Maitreya teachings, do not accept that Hearers and Solitary Realizers realize the absence of self of phenomena. The reasons are those I mentioned above, which are thorough and without error. Those who follow the father and son Nagarjuna, such as Shantarakshita, Jñanagarbha, and their disciples, although it appears that they believe that Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not realize the absence of self of phenomena, these teachers did not understand Nagarjuna's intention as it is, but spoke according to the treatises of the noble Chandrakirti, therefore it is not the intention of the noble ones. Therefore, in the system of the noble Nagarjuna, there is no difference in the meditative realization of the three noble ones, because they all realize that all dharmas are without inherent existence. As it is said in the *Praise of the Transcendental*: "Without realizing the signless, you have said there is no liberation." And, "The Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and the Buddhas all necessarily rely on."
