and because there is no unreasonable reason, the Sautrāntikas also acknowledge it. The Mahāyāna teachers consider that there are two systems: the brothers Asaṅga who follow the Maitreya's teachings, and the father and son Nāgārjuna. Among them, the former believe that the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not realize the absence of self of phenomena due to two reasons, like this: due to the two reasons of unclear mind and not striving for the meaning. The Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas train their minds on the gross objects of knowledge of self-characteristics and general characteristics, but not on the subtle ones, because they are dull-witted and cannot understand the subtle objects of knowledge of self-characteristics and general characteristics, and because they only strive for liberation and do not focus on understanding the vast objects of knowledge, so they do not train their minds on the subtle objects of knowledge. Among them, the gross self-characteristic is the aggregates, elements, and sources. The subtle one is the aspect of the ālaya-vijñāna. By truly hearing, thinking, and deciding on the first nature, one can realize the absence of self of persons, and due to inverted delusion, one will cling to the self of persons. Due to being confused about the second nature, there will arise the imputed views of phenomena, such as considering Īśvara and the creator as real, and the innate views of phenomena, such as clinging to the grasper and the grasped. From truly realizing its nature, one can realize the absence of self of phenomena, because this is the place of the three natures of knowledge, and the three absences of nature are also the absence of self of phenomena. The gross general characteristic is the absence of self of persons, and the subtle one is the absence of self of phenomena. The Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas only strive for liberation, so they only train their minds on the gross parts of self-characteristics and general characteristics, and by that alone they can attain their desired nirvāṇa. Furthermore, because the Śrāvaka's Vinaya does not explain the absence of self of phenomena, and although the Mahāyāna's Vinaya explains the absence of self of phenomena, the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not train on it. As it says in the Ornament: "It is very inappropriate for those who have abandoned the thought of enlightenment, to have the happiness of the altruistic mind and the attainment of its means, the great intention and the supreme vision of it."

Having abandoned that, one will go to peace. As it is said, because they do not have the intention to benefit others, it is said that they do not understand the intention of the Mahayana sutras through hearing and thinking, nor do they realize it through meditation. If the two types of selflessness are not first determined by hearing and thinking, then there will be no realization through meditation later, because from properly analyzing the meaning of hearing with reason, the wisdom born of thought arises, and from meditating single-mindedly on the meaning of thought, the true wisdom that realizes the object of meditation arises. As it is also said in the Ornament: "Here, first, relying on hearing, proper attention arises. From proper attention, the wisdom of the true object arises." Furthermore, in the Explanation of the Profound Meaning, it is said: "The taking consciousness is deep and subtle. All seeds flow like a stream. It is not appropriate to conceive of self. I have not taught this to children." Thus, it is said that the characteristics of the alaya consciousness are not taught as they are to those of the Hearer and Solitary Realizer lineages, and without realizing the alaya consciousness, one does not realize the characteristics of the three natures of knowable objects, and without realizing that, one does not realize the selflessness of phenomena, so the Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not realize the selflessness of phenomena. In the Ornament for Clear Realization, it is said: "In order to abandon the conceptualization of the object of grasping, and because grasping is not abandoned, the path like the horn of a rhinoceros should be known to be summarized." Thus, it is said that Solitary Realizers have the realization that the object of grasping is without inherent existence. In the Compendium of Abhidharma, it is said that Solitary Realizers focus on the Hearer's Vinaya and practice the Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma, but the selflessness of the object of grasping is not taught there. Moreover, in the quote, "Those who have abandoned the aspiration for enlightenment," it is said that since they do not train their minds in the Mahayana Vinaya, one must examine what the cause of realizing the absence of grasping is, so the wise should examine it well. Previously, it seems that even a little doubt had not arisen, but I realize that this meaning is very difficult. If the Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not focus on the Mahayana Vinaya, then in the Mahayana sutras such as the Perfection of Wisdom, the nature of phenomena
