If one possesses them, one will be able to endure harm through the four ascetic practices. If one possesses the endurance of difficult practices, one will initiate diligence for the sake of others. From initiating diligence, concentration arises. Because of abiding in concentration, wisdom arises that knows things as they truly are. As it is said, in the teachings on discipline: What is the difference between the ocean and the footprint of an ox? The difference between generosity and discipline is that. According to this way of speaking, the former, such as generosity, is inferior, while the latter is situated in a superior position, so the order is definite. Fourth, the divisions of generosity: Giving food, clothing, and so on is material generosity; protecting others from destruction is fearlessness generosity; teaching the Dharma with a mind free from material concerns is Dharma generosity; these are the three. The divisions of discipline: Discipline that is included in the seven categories of individual liberation is the discipline of vows; discipline that is included in the six perfections is the discipline of accumulating virtuous Dharmas; discipline that benefits others through the four means of gathering is the discipline of benefiting sentient beings; these are the three. The divisions of patience: Accepting harm to body and mind is the patience of accepting suffering; individually contemplating the two selflessnesses with the three wisdoms is the patience of contemplating the Dharma; not being discouraged by difficult practices is the patience of not caring about harm; these are the three. The divisions of diligence: Not being daunted by the vastness of what is to be accomplished is armor-like diligence; striving in application as if putting on armor is diligence in application; taking joy in benefiting sentient beings is diligence in benefiting sentient beings; these are the three. The divisions of meditation: Generating the bliss of pliancy in body and mind is the meditation of abiding in bliss in this very life; knowing the means to benefit others temporarily and ultimately is the meditation of accomplishing qualities, accomplishing the six superknowledges; benefiting others through the gateway of the six superknowledges is the meditation of benefiting sentient beings; these are the three. The divisions of wisdom: Knowing the individual and general characteristics of phenomena is conventional wisdom; knowing the reality of the two truths is ultimate wisdom; knowing the means to benefit others temporarily and ultimately is the wisdom of benefiting sentient beings; these are the three.

To summarize these six, some say that the first five are the accumulation of merit, and the sixth is the accumulation of wisdom. But the first three are the accumulation of merit, the last two are the accumulation of wisdom, and diligence is the accumulation of both. The fifth is that, for any of the six, such as generosity, without clinging to the three circles of giver, giving, and recipient, in a manner like an illusion, it is called pāramitā because it leads to the other shore of samsara, to a nirvāṇa that does not abide. The sixth is that practicing each of the perfections of generosity, etc., with all six perfections complete, is the mark of a great being. That is, when giving material generosity, its essence is generosity; abandoning the mindset of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas is discipline; having faith in omniscience and not fearing poverty, etc., is patience; delighting in generosity is diligence; dedicating with a single-pointed mind to omniscience, unmixed with other vehicles, is meditation; not focusing on the object of generosity, the giver, etc., is wisdom. This is how to practice generosity with the six perfections complete. Similarly, one should understand the others accordingly. The seventh is that generosity is for eliminating the poverty of oneself and others; discipline is for obtaining the cooling of the heat of afflictions; patience is because it endures the harm of anger; diligence is because it combines with excellent qualities; meditation is because it focuses on the object; wisdom is for realizing ultimate truth. Second, there are five aspects to the practice of śamatha and vipaśyanā: the reason why śamatha and vipaśyanā must be practiced, abandoning obstacles, accomplishing conducive conditions, identifying the nature of śamatha and vipaśyanā, and advising to generate the three companions of wisdom. The first is that nirvāṇa is attained by the union of śamatha and vipaśyanā, and not otherwise, because without the wisdom that knows well the individual and general characteristics of all dharmas, there is no meditation. Because wisdom eliminates doubt about the object of knowledge without adding or subtracting, it is possible to abide comfortably in samādhi on the object. Without meditation, there is no wisdom that knows things as they are, because it is said in the scriptures that when the mind is at peace, one knows things as they are. For any yogi, single-pointed meditation on the object and
