The land, once sown, exhausts itself. But the tree of bodhicitta constantly bears fruit, never diminishing but ever increasing. The Ratnakuta Sutra states: "Manjushri, just as various trees grow by relying on the four elements, so too, Manjushri, roots of virtue, when held by bodhicitta and dedicated to omniscience, increase." Thus it is said. Fourth, the example of the escort shows how to be saved from the fruits of sin: Even if one has committed extremely terrible sins, such as harming the Three Jewels, just as relying on a brave escort liberates one from the great fear of enemies, so too, one should rely on bodhicitta, which enables one to be liberated in an instant from the ripening of those great sins. Why would the cautious not rely on it? They should rely on it. The Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra states: "Son of good family, just as relying on a brave person, one is not afraid of any enemies, so too, the bodhisattva who truly relies on the brave person who has generated bodhicitta is not afraid of any enemies of misdeeds." Thus it is said. Fifth, the example of fire destroys the root of sin: Just as the fire at the end of time burns all the vessels from the first dhyana downwards, so too, bodhicitta certainly burns all great sins, including the five inexpiable sins, in an instant, destroying them from the root. The Array of Trunks Sutra states: "Like the fire at the end of an eon, it burns all misdeeds." Thus it is said. Third, there are two ways to practice the precepts: abandoning adverse conditions and accomplishing favorable conditions. First, having generated bodhicitta, one abandons the four black dharmas, such as deceiving one's lama and those worthy of offerings, and practices the four white dharmas. The four black dharmas are: Maitreya Bodhisattva, a bodhisattva who possesses four qualities will forget bodhicitta. What are the four? They are: deceiving one's khenpo, acharya, lama, and the object of generosity; causing others to regret things for which they have no regret; and those who have truly entered the Great Vehicle,

Not praising those with mothers, not speaking unpleasant words, cutting off (their praise) with non-verbal sounds, approaching others with deceit and deception, this is not a sincere thought. Thus it is said. The four white dharmas are: a Light-Holder Bodhisattva who possesses four dharmas will manifest the mind of enlightenment immediately upon birth in all lifetimes, and will not forget in the intermediate state until dwelling under the Bodhi tree. What are the four? Namely: not speaking falsehoods for the sake of life, or even for the sake of laughter; abiding with a sincere thought in front of all sentient beings without hypocrisy and deception; generating the perception of a teacher towards all Bodhisattvas, and proclaiming their virtues in the four directions; because of not desiring the lesser vehicle, all those who cause sentient beings to mature will cause them to truly attain the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, and truly enlightened Bodhi. Light-Holder, these are the four. Thus it is said. Second, accomplishing favorable conditions, divided into practicing the six perfections, and the method of cultivating calm-abiding and insight meditation, the first of which is further divided into seven: the nature of the six perfections, the temporary and ultimate results, the manner of arising, the order, the classification and aggregation, the manner of purification, the method of practice, and the meaning of the words. First, it is generosity, which is giving up the lord of inner and outer; discipline, which is guarding against the faults of precepts and nature; patience, which is not caring about the harm to body and mind; diligence, which is delighting in virtuous deeds; meditation, which is the mind abiding on the object; and wisdom, which is discriminating the general and specific characteristics of all dharmas. Thus, one should properly train in the six perfections. Second, generosity obtains great enjoyment in the future; discipline obtains the happiness of gods and humans; patience obtains a beautiful form; diligence obtains splendor; meditation pacifies afflictions; wisdom liberates from the two obscurations; and compassion accomplishes all benefits for oneself and others. Third, these perfections arise with the preceding one as the basis for the subsequent one, that is, because of generosity, one does not care about body and enjoyment, and thus takes up discipline.
