Having the wisdom that knows things as they are, one can dry up the ocean of existence like sucking up the water after the heat of summer, because one can quickly dry it up or cross over it. Wisdom here refers to the realization of the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena, because other methods cannot cut off the root of existence. Wisdom without meditation cannot uproot afflictions because it is unstable, and meditation without wisdom can only suppress the manifestation of afflictions, but cannot uproot the seeds. Therefore, liberation is attained through the path of uniting calm abiding and insight. Among these, insight is more important than calm abiding, and calm abiding is not as important. As it is said: Those who practice the teachings, But do not turn to your teachings, Beings blinded by ignorance, Even if they reach the peak of existence, Will still experience suffering and create existence. And: Those who follow your teachings, Even if they have not attained genuine meditation, Can still avert all existences, Like burning away the eye disease of Mara. It is said like this. Therefore, those who desire liberation should first cultivate calm abiding to the point where the mind is workable, and then, starting from mindfulness, strive in the yoga of meditating on the two kinds of selflessness with discriminating wisdom. If one only meditates on the abiding of the mind without discriminating wisdom, one will not even attain worldly detachment, let alone liberation. Secondly, insight without calm abiding is like a candle moved by the wind, unable to abandon afflictions, so one should know that insight with calm abiding can destroy afflictions. Therefore, one should first seek calm abiding with one-pointedness of mind, and this is accomplished by not being attached to worldly things and manifest joy, and not by other means. Therefore, those who wish to cultivate the yoga of calm abiding and insight should distance themselves from the busyness of the body and the distractions of the mind. Thirdly, having no desire for Dharma and good and plentiful alms, being content with little desire, the merit of relying on solitude will arise, and the samadhi of calm abiding and insight will arise. Fourthly, the nature of these calm abiding and insight

What are Śamatha and Vipaśyanā? The Ornament says: "Relying on truly abiding, to make the mind abide in the mind, to clearly distinguish the meaning, are Śamatha and Vipaśyanā." As it says, completely abandoning all objects with elaboration, and truly abiding in the nature of the mind with one-pointedness, this is Śamatha. Vipaśyanā is the wisdom that separately examines the meaning of the two truths, that is, when examining with reasoning such as one and separate from many, all internal and external things are the wisdom that examines emptiness as free from elaboration. The fifth part has five points: the function of the three wisdoms, the inferiority of common meditation, the particular excellence of emptiness, the faults of not cultivating wisdom, and the benefits of generating wisdom. The first is: the wisdom of hearing, by examining the characteristics of what to accept and reject, can suppress the head of coarse afflictions; the wisdom arising from thinking, by repeatedly and separately examining the suchness of things, can suppress the head of coarse afflictions; by familiarizing the meaning of thinking with a one-pointed mind, when familiarity reaches its extreme, the wisdom arising from meditation, in which suchness becomes manifest, can uproot afflictions. The second is: can't afflictions also be subdued by meditating on love and ugliness, etc.? Love and ugliness, etc., do not completely cut off the habitual tendencies of attachment, etc., arising from self-grasping, because they are not contrary to the root of attachment, etc., ignorance of self. Whatever does not harm the cause does not harm the result, just as sweet and oily substances do not harm phlegm disease. The third is: because the view of realizing emptiness is contrary to the root of faults, self-grasping. The nature of that self-grasping, that is, the result, is completely contrary to all faults such as attachment. The fourth is: can afflictions be abandoned by merely the wisdom of hearing and thinking? If one holds the wisdom of hearing and thinking as supreme and does not cultivate it, then suchness will not become manifest, and in the end, hearing and thinking will fall into doubt. That is to say, hearing and thinking do not ascertain suchness as it is. The fifth
