Chapter Six. Chapter Six. Second General Meaning. There are three uncommon paths of the Higher Vehicle: In general, it is the preliminary practice of the common path, the determination of the nature of the path, and the practice of the branches of the path for the benefit of others. The first part has three: favorable conditions, reliance on a virtuous friend, listening to and explaining the Dharma, and cultivating the ten kinds of conduct that are in accordance with the Dharma. The first part has two: the reason why one should rely on a teacher, and the identification of the teacher to rely on. The first part is: To show that reliance on a holy person is the main thing for developing the noble path. In the "Letter to a Friend" it says: "Relying on a virtuous friend" etc. The meaning is that at the beginning of the practice of the path, one should rely on a holy person. The Buddha said that reliance on a virtuous friend is the cause of the complete fulfillment of celibacy. As it is said in the sutra: "Ananda, this is it: a virtuous friend and a virtuous companion is the complete fulfillment of celibacy." Why is that? Ananda, beings who are subject to birth, relying on a virtuous friend, are completely liberated from birth." Therefore, one should always rely on a holy person, just as many beings have attained peace by relying on the Victor. Here, celibacy is the path to liberation. Because all the faults of existence are abandoned for the sake of celibacy and nirvana. The second part is: What are the characteristics of a holy person? A teacher who is superior to others, possessing the discipline of morality, is therefore tamed. Possessing the discipline of mind, he is therefore pacified. Possessing the discipline of wisdom, he is therefore close to pacification. He possesses the qualities of understanding and realization that are superior to the students. He is diligent in activities for the benefit of others. He is rich in the teachings of the Three Baskets. He fully realizes the true nature of reality and speaks to others according to his realization, and is skilled in communication. He does not look at material gains and possesses the nature of love for the students. One should rely on one who has abandoned weariness in uttering instructions and subsequent instructions. So it is said in the "Ornament." The second part has three: how the Dharma is explained, the nature of the Dharma to be explained, and the division of the Three Baskets that explain. The first part has three:

The method of taming the minds of disciples, the method of accommodating sharp and dull faculties, and the method of extensively explaining the oral instructions. First, when the teacher explains the sacred Dharma, some disciples become discouraged, thinking, "How can someone like me achieve liberation and omniscience?" To those who are discouraged and give up effort, (the scriptures say,) "Is there liberation from poverty?" etc., pointing out the faults of discouragement. It also says, "Since sentient beings have become human, in each infinite instant, they can attain perfect enlightenment, therefore, one should not accept discouragement," etc., thereby uplifting their minds. Some disciples are distracted and frivolous for worldly purposes. For those who cannot be used for virtuous deeds, the general and specific faults of samsara are pointed out. For those who are immersed in dullness, the biographies of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are told, and they are made to listen to these wonderful stories. Second, for those who are wise and capable vessels for the profound, the profound emptiness and the vast six perfections, etc., are explained as methods for attaining liberation and omniscience. For those who are of shallow intelligence and incapable vessels for the profound, easy-to-understand concise phrases and easy-to-understand contents, such as the ten virtues and ten non-virtues, etc., are explained, only explaining the Dharma of higher rebirth. Third, if one wants to extensively explain the sutras and treatises, one explains them through the oral instructions of five methods of explanation. First, it is the branch of those with realization entering the scriptures, explaining the stages of listening, thinking, and meditating on the scriptures and the ultimate purpose. After that, in order to understand that purpose, the content of the scriptures before and after is shown in a general way, and the summarized meaning is explained. After that, in order to easily understand the summarized meaning, the meaning of each word in the scriptures is explained. In order to prevent the order of the words from contradicting each other, the connection between the previous and subsequent sentences is explained, and in order to determine whether the words and meanings are logical or not, it is determined through debate, and then explained. Second, regarding the nature of the Dharma to be explained, there are two types. First, determining the six limits, that is, the sutras, etc., that are being explained also have two types: provisional meaning and definitive meaning, literal meaning and non-literal meaning, and intentional and non-intentional.
