Transforming those letters known as "nonsense" into instruments that reveal profound meanings that were previously unexpressed. As it is said: To perceive meaning in the meaningless; To dwell deeply in the inverted; To be utterly afflicted by afflictions; One will attain supreme enlightenment. Like that. The meaning is: "Meaning" is distraction. "Without meaning" is single-pointed concentration in samadhi. Inverting what is permanent, etc., refers to impermanence, etc. Dwelling in that reveals insight. To be utterly afflicted by afflictions through prolonged exertion in the service of others reveals compassion. Thus, by cultivating samadhi and wisdom, and by striving for the benefit of others through compassion, one attains enlightenment. Like that. As for those four hidden meanings, as stated in the Ornament [for Clear Realization]: Hearers and self-nature, likewise, subduing faults, and profound expression itself, those are the four hidden meanings. As it is said. The difference between intention and hidden meaning is: Intention primarily reveals the basis of the intention; hidden meaning primarily reveals the necessity. The third has five parts. First, identifying the words of the Buddha (bka') and the treatises (bstan bcos): Regarding "the words of the Buddha and the treatises that are to be expressed," the definition of the words of the Buddha is: Their direct cause is that they arise directly from the Buddha, they express the two truths, and their function is to eliminate the afflictions of the three realms. From the Uttaratantra: Whatever is meaningful, closely related to the Dharma, speech that eliminates afflictions from all three realms, whatever reveals the benefit of peace, that is the speech of a sage, the opposite is otherwise. Like that. Treatises are: The author is a mindful person without distraction, explaining the meaning of the Buddha's words, thereby showing the path to liberation. That which is solely under the authority of the Victorious One's teachings, spoken by a mindful person without distraction, is in accordance with the path to attaining liberation, that too is taken as the speech of a sage. Like that. Second, identifying the three baskets: The Vinaya, which teaches the training of higher discipline; the Sutra, which teaches the training of mind; and the Abhidharma, which teaches the training of wisdom, are the three baskets. Among these, discipline ripens those who are not yet ripe, while mind and wisdom, in that order, suppress the head of what is to be abandoned and uproot the seeds. Therefore, what is expressed

In general, it is determined as the three trainings, and what it expresses is determined as the three pitakas. Third, identifying the four classes of tantras: Kriya, Charya, Yoga, and Maha Yoga, these are the four classes of tantras. This is also based on the four types of disciples: those with inferior faculties, intermediate faculties, superior faculties, and the most superior faculties. As stated in the Vajra Tent Tantra: "For those with inferior faculties, the Kriya Tantra; after that, the non-Kriya Yoga. For those with superior faculties, the Yoga; after that, the Anuttara Yoga." Fourth, identifying the twelve branches of scripture: from the Sutra Pitaka to the definitive category. Fifth, which pitaka do these belong to? The first five belong to the Shravaka Pitaka, because they are also found in the Shravakas. The fact that the Mahayana possesses these five characteristics is because they are included in the extremely vast and wondrous pitakas. The two pitakas, the extremely vast and the wondrous, are the Bodhisattva Pitaka, because they reveal the inconceivable and vast qualities of the Bodhisattvas. The definitive pitaka is the Abhidharma Pitaka of both the Mahayana and Hinayana, because it definitively establishes the common objects of knowledge of both. The Vinaya-vastu and the other four, because they teach the discipline of morality, are the Vinaya Pitaka, in which the Vinaya-vastu is the main one and the other three are its retinue. Third, the way to cultivate the ten practices that accord with the Dharma is: writing these three pitakas, offering them incense and flowers, giving written scriptures to others, listening to others explain them, reading and upholding them oneself, taking them to heart properly, explaining them to others without distortion, reciting and mastering what has been upheld, properly contemplating the meaning of what has been heard, and single-mindedly meditating on the meaning of what has been contemplated. The nature of these ten practices is an immeasurable accumulation of merit, as stated in the Madhyantavibhaga. Second, there are four points to ascertain the nature of the path: the place of entry is taking refuge in the Three Jewels, generating the mind of enlightenment in the two truths, the way to practice its precepts, and the stages of experiential realization. The first point has six aspects.
