etc. According to the Bodhisattva-bhumi, entering the practice of generating Bodhicitta requires the Pratimoksha vows as a basis. Therefore, it is evident that it will not arise in beings other than humans. Secondly, regarding the three aspects of karma: cause, effect, and nature, firstly, the cause is compassion focused on sentient beings and faith focused on the Buddha. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The power of friends, the power of causes, the power of roots, the power of hearing, the power arising from the habit of virtue, the unstable and the stable arising, the Bodhicitta taught by others is explained." It is also said thus. Secondly, the temporary result. As stated in the Bodhicharyavatara: "This is what pleases the Tathagatas, and it is also what accomplishes one's own benefit. This also removes all fears, so I should always cultivate this." It is said thus. The ultimate result is attaining Buddhahood, as stated in the Manifestation of Complete Enlightenment: "The wisdom of all-knowingness arises from the cause of Bodhicitta, has compassion as its root, and is perfected by skillful means." It is said thus. Also, as stated in the Mind Commentary: "Without the arising of Bodhicitta, one will never attain Buddhahood. In samsara, there is no other method superior to this for accomplishing the benefit of oneself and others." It is said thus. Regarding the nature, there are four points: definition, example, classification, and the difference between aspiration and practice. The first point is as stated in the scriptures. The second point is that the example is the primary consciousness that corresponds to the desire for the fruit of Bodhi, which is the mind consciousness. As stated in the Sunlight Commentary: "What is called Bodhicitta, the mind is consciousness, which is discernment. What is discernment? It is the mind consciousness, because it focuses on all white dharmas, therefore it exists in that." It is said thus. Thirdly, the classification: from the nature, there are two types: aspiration Bodhicitta and practice Bodhicitta; from the aspect of cause, there are two types: obtained through instruction and self-nature; from the aspect of companions, there are twenty-two types; from the aspect of the stages, there are four types. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Bodhicitta on the grounds, aspiration, increased intention, purity, and also the other ripening, likewise, it is said to abandon obscurations." It is said thus. Fourthly, what is primarily focused on the aspiration for Bodhi is aspiration Bodhicitta, and what enters the path of generosity etc. after taking vows is practice Bodhicitta, some consider it thus.

The mind that aspires to benefit others, if not accompanied by the aids of practicing generosity and so on, is the aspirational Bodhicitta. If it is accompanied, it is the entering Bodhicitta. This is what Sherjung Lodro (Tibetan: ཤེར་འབྱུང་བློ་གྲོས།) said, and it is also the view of Sengge Sangpo (Tibetan: སེང་གེ་བཟང་པོ།). Secondly, the meaning of the branches has seven aspects: the nature of Bodhicitta, the difference of conventional entry, the nature of ultimate non-conceptualization, the distinction between name and meaning associated with the stages and paths, how the two Bodhicittas arise, the twenty-two categories illustrated by metaphors, and the benefits of generating Bodhicitta. The first is: the mind that desires and is in accordance with the perfect and complete enlightenment for the sake of others. The second is: desiring with the mind, and so on, which is easy to understand. The difference between aspiration and entry is: for example, like wanting to go to some place, the thought of wanting to attain Buddhahood for the sake of others is the aspirational Bodhicitta; like walking, entering the path that causes the attainment of Buddhahood and wanting to practice that path is the entering Bodhicitta. Thus, the wise who want to accomplish the benefit of themselves and others should understand the difference between these two in sequence, just as they know the difference between the two examples. The third is, the difference in realization: listening to the Dharma with reverence and service to the body, speech, and mind of the Nirmanakaya of the perfectly complete Buddha, the difference in practice: accumulating merit and wisdom for countless eons, the difference in realization: because the wisdom that does not conceptualize the apprehended and the apprehender arises for all phenomena, therefore, this Bodhicitta is considered the ultimate Bodhicitta. The fourth is, this Bodhicitta is distinguished by how it is associated with the grounds, there are four types: below the path of application, self and other are equal, but not directly realized, only the general characteristics are taken as the object of interest, therefore it is the Bodhicitta arising from aspiration; from the first to the seventh ground, realizing the equality of self and other, it is the purification of superior intention; in the three pure grounds, there is the Bodhicitta of effortless and spontaneously arising non-conceptual wisdom, which is considered different from the previous two. Similarly, in the ground of Buddhahood, having abandoned the two obscurations, there is the Bodhicitta of abandoning obscurations.
