It is the nature of diligence. The fourth is that all that is to be abandoned diminishes, and all that is the antidote is attained. The fifth is that this is cultivated in the middle of the accumulation path. When one cultivates by properly examining the objects of mindfulness, one sees the faults and merits of what is to be abandoned and the antidote, and thus diligence arises in taking and abandoning them. Why is it called right abandonment? Because it abandons the unfavorable, it is called that. The third also has five aspects: object, method of cultivation, nature, fruit of cultivation, and limit. The first is the activities accomplished by samadhi, such as emanation and transformation. The second is, as it says in the Madhyāntavibhāga: "Five faults and eight efforts arise from the cause of reliance." Thus, one cultivates with the eight efforts of abandonment. The eight are: desire, effort, faith, pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity. There are also five unfavorable factors. As it says in the Madhyāntavibhāga: "Laziness and loss of instruction, forgetfulness, sinking and excitement, non-application and application, these five are considered faults." Thus, first is laziness, which does not engage in cultivation. Its antidote is the desire to seek meaning, and the faith of manifest belief, and the effort to engage in habituation, and the four pliancies of body and mind. The actual antidote is effort. Its place is desire. Its cause is faith. The fruit of effort is the pliancy of mind. When engaging in application, forgetting the instruction itself is a fault. Its antidote is the mindfulness of not forgetting the instruction in mind. When entering the main practice, sinking and excitement are faults. Their antidote is the awareness that observes them. When sinking and excitement arise, not applying to sinking and excitement itself is a fault. Its antidote is the attention that applies the mind to the antidote of sinking and excitement. When one engages effortlessly due to the inequality of sinking and excitement, applying the mind is a fault. Its antidote is equanimity, which abides without effort and without distraction. As it also says, in the Madhyāntavibhāga: "Not forgetting the object, sinking and excitement and investigation, this

It says: Manifestly creating and pacifying and subduing. Thus it is said. The third is, the general nature is samadhi, and there are four from the aspect of companions: The samadhi of aspiration, relying on practicing with reverence, touches the state of one-pointedness of mind; the samadhi of diligence, relying on constant practice, touches the state of one-pointedness of mind; the samadhi of mind, relying on planting seeds through prior habituation, touches the state of one-pointedness of mind; the samadhi of action, relying on the cause of thoroughly distinguishing the Dharma taught by others, touches the state of one-pointedness of mind. The fourth is, whatever one desires to manifest, such as magical powers, and by relying on that, it will be manifested. The fifth is, it is cultivated during the stage of the great accumulation path. Why is samadhi called the foot of magical powers? Because it is the basis for the arising of all qualities, therefore it is said thus. The second has two parts. First, cultivating the five faculties at the peak of heat: Here too, there are five. The object is the four truths, which are included in the practice of the noble path, and therefore become entities with the aspect of truth. The method of cultivation is: with faith, in the manner of believing that the truths are to be known and abandoned, etc.; with diligence, in order to quickly realize the suchness of the truths, in a manner of joy; with mindfulness, in a manner of not forgetting the object of realizing the suchness of the truths; with samadhi, in a manner of one-pointedness of mind; with wisdom, cultivating in a manner of individually distinguishing the aspects of the truths. The nature is: the faculty of faith, the faculty of diligence, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of samadhi, the faculty of wisdom, these are the five. The divisions: all virtuous qualities have the five faculties of faith, etc. The result is: quickly attaining the path of seeing, and the basis of the path of cultivation is accomplished. Second, the method of cultivating the five powers at the peak of forbearance: The object and method of cultivation here are the same as before. The nature is: those five, such as faith, increase in power, and without mixing with opposing factors such as lack of faith, only the antidote arises, which is called the five powers. The result is: the peak of forbearance, and the accomplishment of the path of seeing. The boundary is forbearance, and the peak of Dharma is thoroughly cultivated.
